One of the main objective of an internship is to expose me to a particular job by
my profession in a company. | might have an idea about what a job is like, | won't
know until | actually perform it if it's what | thought it was, if | have the training
and skills to do it and if it's something | like. Assists me to develop
employer-valued skills such as team work, communications and attention to
detail. Also expose me to the environment and expectations of performance in
the construction in private or public companies or government entities.
Specific objective
To make the student gain future employment - if the student is very active which
means accomplishes every task he or she is assigned on time and also if the
student has a good behavior that means the student may have a good chance of
employed in that company after graduates.Being an intern gives you more
opportunities to build connections with company professionals that can be very
beneficial for your future career.
To develop and increase self-confidence of the student - this internship program
main objective is to increase the student's confidence. Before the internship the
students have theoretical knowledge only this makes them to have low
confidence in their potential. But after they gain more practical
knowledge in the internship it makes them gain more confidence in their

During my internship period | have been engaged with both the
office and the site works. In my first couple of months | have been
working in Bench Sheko Zone construction office, consists of
three main bodies which are contract administration, regulatory
body and quality control. So | have been working with this three
bodies of the office and matching the theoretical knowledge | got in
class with the actual practical works that are done in the office and
then for my reaming months of internship period I was engaged in
site works.SCHOOL DESIGN

Boulders and cobbles (size larger than 75mm) which are strong,
dense, hard, durable and free from clay and loamy admixtures
are filled above the compacted soil to depth of 25cm or more.
This fill ensures that the ground slab is laid over a rigid
‘structure. All hard core should satisfy the following condition.
= Stone for hard core is sound and approved quality.
= All stones in hard core are approximately equal and recommended
size.
= All hard core is well rammed and consolidated with the top surface,
blended with crashed aggregate thickness in accordance with the
standard technical specification and comes from Gabuka which is 4 kms
away from Mizan town.
= The spacing of stone to result in minimum concrete consumption.
= They should be placed with their sharp ages facing up wards.COLUMNS
It Is erected structural member used to resist axial loads and transfer the load
to the foundation.
1. Checking the precisions of formworks, checking their horizontal and
vertical alignment.
2. Generally quality controls in construction materials like; - concrete
ingredients (cement, sand, aggregate & water), equipment/machineries used.
3. Checking the dimensi
4. Checking the number of reinforcement bar placed on beam, column, stairs,
ups and slab.
5. Checking the reinforcement bars bended by bar benders for beam, stair,
slab and stirrups. Structural elements in site that I have been engaged to work
with.
6. Check the time frame for the removal of form work (24 hr)
7. Proper curing (4-5 days) to attain to its full strength.
8. Check if there is segregation.
in of slab, beam, stair, and column.BEAM
Beam is a flexural element used to transfer load from roof / floor to
column.
1. Prepare the reinforcement as per the design (length, type, diameter, and
cut bent..) ~ lap length of beam in tension zone is 70*D
2. Prepare the form work and assemble them around the beam with the
required clear cover by providing spacer of the right thickness.
as per the design.
3. Place the prepared reinforcement on their posi
4. Finally casting of the beam was at the time with in the slab.
5. Check the time frame for the removal of formwork (2idays)
6. Proper curing (7 days)
The top bar of a beam must overlap in the middle in order the sheer force
became zero and also the bottom bar must overlap in the support because
the moment will be zero in the support so my supervisor told me that in the
bar work for beams we have to check the overlaps of the top and the bottom
bars are properly done otherwise the building have a big chance of
collapsing.LAB REINFORCEMENT
Is a flat horizontal structural member of the building, which carries and
transfers the applied vertical load to the beam. In our site there is two ways
slabs and also they are all reinforcement slabs.
Casting procedure
1. First props prepared.
2. After that soffits were provided and spacer was provided Then reinforce-
ments mesh was provided depend on designs like bar diameter which is
used8mm,10mm,12mm,l6mm, and C/C were 100mm,120mm,140mm,150mm,
160mm,200mm.
3. And checking - no of bars with detailed drawing
-Spacer for slab (Kebeleto) is used to keep the spacing between the top and
bottom bar. They are used to give enough clear cover for the reinforcement
bars.SLAB REINFORCEMENT
Ihave also seen how the sewage pipe and electrical conduits were installed
in this reinforced concrete slab, then in site | have seen that after the form
work and the bar for the slab are set then the conduits are placed parallel
with the floor below and also for sewage pipes a cubic material is placed in
the form work according to the drawing, then after concrete is filled that
cubic material is removed, then a hole is left for the pipe in order it will go
through the slab when installed. The horizontal levelling of the slab was also
checked by using both the levelling instrument and also
by using water in a tubeOVERALL BENEFITS GAINED

Internship program is partially valuable to private and governmental
companies.
Many business owners and managers realize that internship programs can
provide them with an early opportunity to acquire the talents of a new
generation of workers and, in many cases, sell themselves as a quality place
for students to begin their careers after they graduate.
While | participate in this internship | expect that only practical and theoretical
knowledge will be gained in the internship but after completing of the
internship | was able to realize that | got so many benefits.
The major benefits | got from the internship are classified and stated as below
Practical skills
When | first started on the company everything was new for me. | had only
the theoretical knowledge of the works. It was really fascinating and
inspiring to see and experience the lessons | have been learning for the past
three years. So | tried to had experience and learn every work as much as |
can.
I tried to learn every aspects of the work both technical and non-technical
terms. These are:
= What | learn regarding the building design in the office most of the
designs must first be functional, simple and modern and most importantly to
make the design economical as possible by relating each work to its cost.
= Improved my ability of understanding and reading working drawings.
- Casting and curing of concrete and different bare works
= Construction of masonry.THEORETICAL
KNOWLEDGE
Internship program gives me the opportunity to apply my theoretical
knowledge in real world environments, In addition to the practical skill.
Theoretical knowledge is dependable on principles, logic and calculations. It
is interesting when the theoretical knowledge and the practice meet exactly
as you wanted to almost all the course we took were focused on theoretical
part, thanks to this internship program, we are now able to upgrade our
theoretical knowledge by practice. The most things that I get through
internship program was the knowledge how I can interpret the theoretical
part to the practical ones.
Generally speaking, my theoretical knowledge got strengthen more by those
practical techniques invested on site. It assists me in moving toward my
career goals by combining what | had learned from school, practical and
supervised work experience, it thus explained the necessity of every student
to undergo this process.
Team playing skills
Even if tasks are done individuals by the respective person at different
section of company, there are times at which different individuals come
together to work for common goals of the company for increasing
productivity. The most important point in team playing skill is just reaching
an agreement from different points on the work to be done. Furthermore,
to have a common understanding on the task that is to be accomplished, |
always try to listen carefully those individuals with whom | am working.
After listening others idea, | provide an idea which | think is very
constructive for the task being done. From team work | get:
1. Limprove how can | used individual knowledge to the benefit of the
Work
2. I get the way how to meet the company schedule by using the team.
3. Knowledge on the modification of design.
4, To facing site challenges.LEADERSHIP SKILL
Leadership is a process of leading the careers of the company. Problems in
the company come in all manners indifferent period time. Thus, a person who
is in the position of leadership seeks optimal solution to problems and should
be smart enough to manage those indivi duals whomhe/she is leading.
What | gain from the internship regarding improving leadership is that to
inspire workers into higher levels of teamwork, there are certain things must
be known to do that, these are;

3. Know peoples and look out for their well-being
4. Keep workers informed
5. Respect all individuals
6.And most of all know that we are all learners and to have an open
mind for new thingsols ar alle)
In my internship duration | have learned two types of ethics such as;
1. Personal ethics
2. Professional ethics
Personal Ethics
These principles of personal ethics are values which are expected to be
possessed by all individual in their life, and contributed a lot for a smooth
interaction among individuals and peaceful coexistence of a society. The
following are some of personal ethics;
1. Concern for the well-being of other
2. Honesty
3. Fairness
4. Refusing to take un-fair advantage
Professional Ethics
Ethics refers to the standards or a set of moral principles for regulating
behaviours of a certain defined profession. In order to consider that an
activity to be a profession, it should be carried out by one who has
advanced education, knowledge, and skills. Thus, for developing healthy
working environment and increase productivity, ethical work conducts are
important medium. The following are some of the common professional
ethical principles what | gained in the internship period.
1. Punctuality
2. Office disciplines
3. Reality
4. Honesty
5. Transparency and accountabilityONCLUSION
Conclusion
The primary goal of this Internship Program is to able students incorporate
and emphasize the lessons learned in the classroom into a real-world
experience set in a professional practice-oriented environment, with the
intern’s work preferably overseen by a licensed professional. During this
internship | got a chance to observe and practice many construction
activities. | think it would be fair to say the internship program has been a
helpful experience in exposing us to the real
engineering work. It can also be categorized as an exciting event depending
upon how exited one really is to put his theoretical knowledge in to practice.
I was also trying to inter relate the thing | have been learning for the past 4
years with the things saw in the site and office. It had ups and downs but in
the end it left me with knowledge that | wouldn't acquire if | spent the time
learning in the University.Without this internship program graduating in
architecture and actually being a professional would have been difficult. This
intern program showed me that | should have the follawing qualities, in
addition to the technical skills and academic knowledge:
1. Company profile
2. Being actionable, that is fast responding
3.Being problem solver, in case any faults occur.
4. Being work focused
6. Being reliable, loyal and honest
7. Being responsible for my work, etc.
In my internship period | developed and enhance employability skills which
I mentioned above. Because | felt like | am part of the organizations and felt
more to increase our productivity hence, gain a greater sense of
responsibility and personal direction. During my stay in the companies
every member was very supportive and keen on helping me understand
different management and civil works. | had an excellent experience and i
learned a lot
