The Versatile New MSR5

Oil Water Separator

The new MSR5 oil water separator is a very compact but efficient separa-
tor for use in many situations. It can be utilized as a system for treating
the water from elevator pits, or simply as a small separator for industrial
process streams. The MSR5 can be used with or without a pump and
automatic on-off controls or other accessories can be provided if desired.
Operating Principles
MSR Coalescing plate modules are designed to separate oil from water utilizing the buoyancy of the oil
droplets. The droplets rise within the water flow according to Stokes’s Law, a mathematical relationship
that allows calculation of the rise velocity based on the droplet sizes and the difference in specific gravity
between the water and the oil. In general, smaller droplets and/or droplets of greater specific gravity rise
more slowly.

Because the droplets common in both industrial applications and stormwater are generally very small,
and very small droplets rise very slowly. To facilitate good removal, the rise distance must be short.

Ordinary large empty tanks or API separator type vaults are not efficient at removing small oil droplets
because the small droplets rise slowly and the rise distance required for separation is large. Separators
equipped with MSR Media can therefore be much smaller and less expensive than API type systems.

MSR Coalescing Media plates are closely spaced to minimize rise distances and ensure capture of even
very small droplets. The coalescing plates are made from an oleophilic “oil-loving” plastic that helps
capture droplets and encourages coalescing. They are available in either nominal 8 mm or nominal 16
mm space

The water flow carries the droplets into the modules where they rise by buoyancy up to the underside of
the coalescing plates where they are captured. As more droplets are captured they form a layer on the
plates and eventually break loose as large drops and migrate to the surface thorough the oil ports de-
signed for that purpose. The oil forms a layer on the surface of the water and is periodically removed for
recycling.

MSR5 Operations
As shown in the drawing above, water enters the left side of the separator via the inlet coupling and is
directed downward below the operating surface by the inlet baffle. And it flows through the media, the oil
is removed to the surface. Eventually an oil layer builds up and overflows into the oil tank. Purified water
flows under the oil tank and over the water overflow, and thence from the outlet coupling to disposal.
MSR Separators for Water Purification
MSR Coalescing plate separators are one of the best ways to separate two non-
mixing liquids. Almost any hydrocarbon oil such as leaked lubricating oils or anti-
rust oils can be removed from water. MSR has many years experience in designing
systems for varying applications.

MSR SYSTEM ADVANTAGES

MSR Coalescing plate separators have many advantages over other methods of
removing oil from coolant:

 Coalescing plates are not used up like coalescing or other filter cartridges
and have extremely long field life. Ten years or more life before replace-
ment is possible, making maintenance infrequent.
 Recovered oil may recycled.
 Coalescing plate systems are cleanable and can often be cleaned in place,
making maintenance easy in addition to being infrequent.
 No absorbents to be used up and require disposal.
 Unlike cartridge type coalescers, coalescing plate separators can recover
from large amounts of surfactants (soaps or detergents) which would re-
quire replacement of cartridge type coalescers.
 Media available in either nominal 8 mm or nominal 16 mm spacing

MSR5 Installations
The MSR5 separator system is designed either be hung on the wall or supported on a separate
stand. The MSR5 is available with standard pump installed, and with a control system to ensure
satisfactory operation. It comes completely assembled and ready to operate. Installation and op-
erating instructions are provided with each unit and area also available on request.
