End of Unit 1 Assessment: Aspects of


Character: Summer of the Mariposas
(For Teacher Reference)

Students read chapter 12 of Summer of the Mariposas, updating their Text-Based Discussion
note-catcher with aspects of character and evidence from the chapter. Students then complete the
end of unit assessment, in which they participate in a fishbowl group discussion about aspects of
character in Summer of the Mariposas, quoting accurately from the text.

What does the incident with the nagual reveal about Odilia and Juanita?

1. In Chapter 12, Odilia calls on the goddess Tonantzin to help her and her sisters escape the
nagual. Reread page 187, beginning where Odilia awakens her sisters (“Juanita, Velia,
Delia, I called to my sisters . . .”) until the end of the chapter. How does each girl respond
during their attempts to escape? What aspect of her character does this reveal? Record
