ESSAY: How do the characters in the text, Where the Streets Had a Name written by Randa Abdel- Fattah grow from
the tragedies around them?

You are to complete the following template. This template will form the basis of your essay.

Deconstruction: In the novel Where the streets had a name how did the characters in the
novel grow from the disasters around them?

Main Points / Focus: 1.Who are the main characters in the novel?

2.How did the characters grow and learn from the tragedies around them?

3. Is this novel a true story and has this writer experienced the same situation?

Response Structure:
Introduction: G – General situation: A lot of people have gone through a tragedy in their life.

E – Expand: The novel is called Where the streets had a name and is written by
Randa Abdel Fattah, and it is about a girl named Hayaat and experiences a
curfew and her family gets executed. She goes on a journey to get soil from
her grandmothers’ land and Hayaat promises that her grandmother will touch
the soil again.

L – Link: This book uses fiction and non-fiction. The characters are fiction but
there are some things that are non-fiction like the war in Palestine.

“We raced to Abo Yusuf’s grocery store.”
This means that they only had a limited time to get their things before they
had to go back to their apartment.

Idea 1 “The ricochet of a bullet has spurted into my cheek and forehead and my
face is forever distorted with shame of my clumsiness.”
This quote explains the scar on her face and how she is ashamed of her scar on
her face.

Idea 2 “I turn to grab Masaya’s hand. But she’s crumpled on the ground. A bullet

has shattered through her forehead.”
This quote explains when Maysaa had died from a soldier who shot a bullet
through her forehead.

“With three-month-old Mohammad nestled close to her chest in a makeshift
sling, Mama delegated. She sent me to the bread section. Baba, holding the
hand oh my seven-year-old brother, Tariq, was sent to toiletries. Jihan, my
older sister, was sent to household cleaning product. Mama dealt with the
rest”
This quote explains that they were all separated to get different t things so
they could get the things quicker.

“Mama!” “Help!”
These quotes explain that Hayaat was screaming for help from her mother to
help Siti Zainab.

Quotes, Techniques
Idea 3 “Will they have me wait obediently like a trained dog to leave one of my
own towns and enter another?”
This quote was said by Nervine, and she was complaining that she didn’t want
to walk past the checkpoint and catch a minibus.

Conclusion / L- Every person can grow from there tragedies.


Summary
E- Even though Hayaat went through a lot of things in her life she still
managed to cope with everything and achieved to get the soil from her
grandmother’s land and let her grandmother touch her soil before she passed
away.

G- It doesn’t matter if you go through a lot of tragedies in the end it always


works out.

Idea: You clearly state the overall idea of your paragraph.
Expand: You explain your idea in more detail by specifying ideas you will include in your
paragraph.
Quote: You offer a quote to support your idea.
Technique: You highlight the technique used in the quote you have nominated. All the
meanwhile, linking back to the idea and question.
Explanation: You explain how the quote and technique demonstrate the idea you are attempting
to show and, in turn, answer the question.
Link: You show the overall link of your paragraph by summarising it in one sentence.

OUTLINE OF CONCLUSION: The acronym for the conclusion is LEG. Yep! It’s your introduction backwards.
L = Link
Linking the overall ideas you have discussed in a summary sentence or two by linking to the question.
E = Expand
Expand on these ideas by highlighting the main points you have attempted to show by linking to the question.
G = General Statement
End with on overall general statement which shows the main idea(s) in one sentence.
