A Dream Deferred

By Langston Hughes

What happens to a dream deferred?

Does it dry up

Like a raisin in the sun Or fester like a sore— And then run?

Does it sink like a rotten meat?

Or crust and sugar over—

Like a syrupy sweet/ Maybe it just sags

What’s More

Let us move on to some important ideas and let us try to connect the poem to the
dreams of people living in this uncertain and ambiguous world.

The poem Harlem (A Dream Deferred) is written by African-American Poet Langston

Hughes at the time of the Harlem Renaissance. The poet talks about a dream which is
deferred or delayed. The dream is that of equality and freedom for the African-Americans
who have been discriminated against on the basis of their color in America for ages.

The poem had been so powerful that a great black author wrote a play depicting how
his family suffered from the cruelty of the world. Lorraine Vivian Hansberry (May 19, 1930 –
January 12, 1965) was a playwright and writer. She was the first African-American female
author to have a play performed on Broadway. Her best known work, the play A Raisin in the
Sun, it highlights the lives of Black Americans living under racial segregation in Chicago. The
title comes from a Langston Hughes poem about dreams and what happens to our dreams
when they fail to become reality, "What happens to a dream deferred? Does it dry up/like a
raisin in the sun?"

In a Nutshell
A Raisin in the Sun portrays a few weeks in the life of the
Youngers, an African-American family living on the South Side of
Chicago in the 1950s. As the story starts, the Youngers are about to
receive an insurance check for $10,000. This money
comes from the deceased Mr. Younger‘s life insurance policy. Each of the adult members of
the family has an idea as to what he or she would like to do with this money. But the most
significant dream is Mama Lena‘s because she wants to transfer to a neighborhood where
white Americans live.

The long-standing appeal of A Raisin in the Sun lies in the fact that the
family's dreams and aspirations for a better life are not confined to their race, but can be
identified with by people of all backgrounds. Another major themes or central ideas in the

3
story are the value of dreams and the importance of family. All of the members of the family
has a separate, personal dream for their lives but each never left his/her saga of being one
family.

American Literature - Unit 4 pp. 431-435

What I Can Do

The only white character to appear on the story is Karl Lindner,

a representative of the Clybourne Park Improvement Association, he bribes Walter
Younger not to move in their new community because the place is only for the White
society. Lindner symbolizes power and racism in the story.
If the Youngers accepted the bribe, do you think they were able to achieve all
their dreams especially Mama Lena‘s dream? Justify your answer. Write your
answer on a piece of paper.

to each one of us. Then explain the meaning or message behind that symbol. Use a
clean sheet of paper or coupon bond for your drawing and explanation.
