Life is full of ups and downs. One day, you may feel like you have it all
figured out but then in a moment’s notice, you have been thrown a curve ball.
Everyone has to face their own set of challenges in life. Learning how to overcome
challenges will help you stay centered and remain calm under pressure. Winning
over different challenges in life will make you stronger, more independent and have
a mature thinking to what kind of challenges you are and will be up against.
Literature on the other hand, has always been one effective way to explore
and address social issues and challenges in human culture. Poems, stories, plays,
and other types of fictional media often have some social or cultural concern
embedded in the thematic background of a narrative. A social issue is some
problem or concern connected to a larger issue that affects society in general.
Oftentimes, the social issues brought forward in fiction reflect contemporary
concerns in the author's own world. This type of issue in literature often shows up
as a theme that affects the plot and outcome of the story. In this lesson, we will
take a look at the best way to identify and narrow our focus to the social issues
portrayed in the poem with a few examples.
