THE Department of Education (DepEd) recently launched Guidelines on Galaw Pilipinas: The Deped

national calisthenic exercise program, Deped Order No. 060 S. 2021, which aimed to promote a healthy
lifestyle and featured steps and movements from cultural dances in the Philippines.

DepEd, through the Bureau of Curriculum Development (BCD) and Special Program Division, named the
program "Galaw Pilipinas: Thus, galaw symbolized the different movements from the country's
treasured folk, cultural and tribal dances as well as a few stances from the national sport, arnis.

"Galaw Pilipinas" aimed to promote an active lifestyle among Filipinos that would be beneficial to the
learners' physical and emotional well-being. It also aimed to improve strength flexibility, cardiovascular
endurance and coordination among learners as well as balance their lifestyle.

Movements from Philippine folk and tribal dances such as rigodon royale, an Marol, kiwel-kiwel,
maglalatik, atraca, lapay and Sinulog were put together to assemble the routines of "Galaw Pilipinas."

The calisthenics also integrated arnis strikes. According to BCD, this signified the importance of arnis as a
national sport.

The implementation of "Galaw Pilipinas" encouraged all DepEd personnel, educators and learners from
public and private schools nationwide to adopt the national calisthenic exercise as part of flag
ceremonies and other morning activities.
