IŞIK UNIVERSITY

MASTER THESIS WRITING GUIDE

CHAPTER 1

1. INTRODUCTION

Graduates except for the non-thesis master's program at Işık University, all students
in the status of a master's must be completed successfully MA thesis. Thesis is a scientific
study that must be approved by an academic board. In order to protect the academic
success of Işık University students and to share the benefits obtained from other research, 4
identical copies of each thesis in cloth bound must be submitted to the Graduate Education
Institute. This guide defines the style and formatting arrangements for the preparation of
the thesis/scientific review to be submitted to Işık University Graduate Education Institute.
The purpose of this guide is to meet the standards published by Işık University
Graduate Education Institution and to ensure that these standards are consistently applied
in all theses managed by Işık University master's programs. The format rules stated below
aim to ensure that all theses approved by Işık University have the same standards. It is
important that graduate students read and understand the rules stated here while writing
and finalizing their thesis. All of these rules must be complied with for a thesis to be
accepted by Işık University Gradute Education Institution.
CHAPTER 2

2. GENERAL PRINCIPLES AND PARTS OF THE THESIS

All theses must be prepared electronically by using a word processor (eg MS

Word), markup language (eg LaTeX) and drawing or graphics software.
All tables, figures and formulas must be prepared electronically using a word
processor or related software. Figures that cannot be prepared electronically must be
created by hand, adhering to the principles of technical drawing. All tables and figures
must also be given within the paragraphs of the main text of the theses.
It is entirely the thesis author's responsibility to correct the narrative
weaknesses/distortions, spelling and format errors that occur in the writing of the thesis.
Laser or ink-et printouts must be used in the printing of the thesis. All printouts
must be printed with permanent black ink and only on one side of the paper. Apart from
tables, visual materials such as drawings, graphics, figures, diagrams, plates and
photographs can be colored provided that they are clear and comply with the rules in the
guide.
It must not be any ink corrections, overwriting, corrections, correction tape, pastes,
additions between the lines or corrections made by scribbling on the final copy. If any
corrections are required (inking corrections or overwriting are not permitted) they must be
made on the original text and the corrected pages must be reprinted before copies of the
thesis are produced.
All theses must consist of three main parts: the starting pages, the body and the
references. The order of appearance and page numbering arrangements given in Table 1.
must be applied to all theses in the same way.

Tables, List of Figures, List of Symbols, List of Abbreviations, Chapter Titles, Conclusion,
References, Appendices, and CV) must be centered between the edges without
punctuation, and 6 cm below the top of the page. The use of word breaks in titles and start
pages are not allowed. Titles must be centered in the center of the page.
3.3. Type and Size

The text of the thesis must be written in 12 type size Times New Roman font as
using normal font. Words, sentences or definitions that are intended to be emphasized in
the text can be written in ‘italic’, but they must not be written in bold. Bold letters,
symbols and italic must be used in a limited way throughout the writing of the thesis. The
font of the footnotes and endnotes must be 10 points. Figure captions and table captions
must be 12 points. The characters in the table and figures can be reduced to 8 points if
there is a lack of space.

3.4. Line Spacing

The thesis text must be written using one and a half (1.5) line spacing. There is no
need to leave spaces between paragraphs. Tables, long quotations, footnotes, endnotes,
references, subtitles and algorithms (pseudo codes, software programs) must be single line
spacing.

3.5. Paragraph Formalization and Alignment

The first line of each paragraph must always be written 1 cm indent (left tab /1 tab).
Paragraphs must be arranged to "justified". No blank lines must be left between the
paragraphs that make up the thesis text.

If a paragraph divided into pages, at least two of the lines must appear together at
the end or the beginning of the page. All titles and subheadings must be followed by at
least two lines of a paragraph before the page break.

Algorithm definitions (pseudo-codes, software program passwords) must be written

single spaced using monospaced fonts as if they were a separate paragraph, with 1 cm
paragraph indentation from the left margin.
3.6. Page Numbering

All pages are numbered. Beginning pages except the front and inner cover pages
(such as, Approval page, Acknowledgement, Abstract, Özet, Table of Contents, List of
Tables, List of Figures, List of Symbols, List of Abbreviations) lowercase Roman
numerals must be used (i, ii, iii, ….). Arabic numerals (1, 2, 3,…) must be used in all page
numbers, starting from the body of the thesis (named “Introduction”), and also pages that
contain images, tables, figures and pictures must be used continuously throughout the
thesis. It must be applied up to the last page.

All page numbers must be at the bottom center, at least 1 cm below the nearest line
of text and within the page margin that specified above. All page numbers must be in
Times New Roman and 12 type size.

3.7. Multiple Volumes

If the finished original text exceeds 5 cm thick, it must be divided into two or more
volumes, each still no more than 5 cm thick. All volumes must be numbered consecutively
using uppercase Roman numerals. Each additional volume must contain a title page. Title
pages, Volume I, Volume II, etc., under the title. must be the same as to be written only to
separate the volumes.

Used numbering system must continue in each volume. Just like the numbering that
starts with the title page of Volume I, the numbering after the starting page in other
volumes continues where it left off in the following volume. Each volume must contain a
complete Table of Contents, List of Tables, List of Figures, List of Symbols, and List of
Abbreviations.

3.8. Front Page and Binding

All master's theses must be binded in a dark blue clothbound. All doctoral theses
must be binded in black clothbound. Bound theses other than the defined cloth binding are

number with dots and this page must continue to be numbered with roman numerals.

The List of Tables must be prepared according to the description in Appendix A.

4.1.8 Figures/Images/Symbols and Abbreviations List

If any, these lists must be on separate pages as in the List of Tables and must be
prepared using the same rules.
4.2. Body

4.2.1 Titles

The main body of the thesis must be divided into many sections to help the reader
understand the subject. Although the detailed structure of the text varies according to
academic disciplines, the formatting of the text must be completely consistent. Titles must
be written in bold black without indentation. Each of the words in the titles must be
capitalized, excluding conjunctions. Each section must be the same in terms of layout and
writing style on the page. The section number and section title must be placed at the top of
the page.

Chapters must be written in bold and capital letters in harmony with Arabic
numerals are numbered (CHAPTER 1, CHAPTER 2, etc.). In addition to the general
titles; as in the introduction, the chapters must be given with short but concise titles.

Only new chapters must start with a new page. The presentation of subsections
within the chapter must be continuous; Partially filled pages of text are only acceptable on
pages that do not contain text, such as tables and images.

The title “CHAPTER 1” must be bold, centered between the edges of the 14 type
size, and 6 cm below the top without punctuation; the first level titles are in bold and
centered in 14 points, 1.5 cm below. The text must also start at least 1.5 cm below.

First level titles must be numbered as 1., 2., 3., …..

Second level titles and first and second level subheadings must be left aligned, bold
and 12 type size.

Second level titles must be numbered 2.1, 2.2, …, first level subheadings 2.1.1,
2.1.2, … and, if necessary, second level subheadings 2.1.1.1, 2.1.1.2. The first letter of
each word must be capitalized, excluding conjunctions, propositions, and affixes.

Second level titles must be separated from the preceding and following text by 18
pt space or carriage return before and after paragraph spacing. In the first and second level
subheadings, a 12 pt space must be left before and after the paragraph spacing between the
preceding and following text. However; Second level subtitles must be avoided if possible
and higher level subtitles must not be allowed. The first letter of each word (taking into
account the grammar in English and other foreign languages) must be capitalized, except
for conjunctions, prepositions and articles (artikel).

4.2.2 Visual Materials

Visual materials includes drawings, graphs, figures, tables, diagrams, plates and
photographs and are placed wherever the author considers appropriate. As a general rule,
they must be placed the closest to where they are relevant in the text and after they are
mentioned.

Table numbers on the images; figure numbers and subtitles must be written below
the image in a justified form. Table numbers, figure numbers and subtitles must be
separated from each other with at least 18 pt space before and after paragraph spacing.

Images with a width of half a page or less may appear on the same page as the text,
in which case the image is separated from the text by 1.5 cm up and down.

Images that are too wide for vertical positioning to the left and right edges must be
rotated 90 degrees clockwise so that the top of the image is aligned parallel to the left edge
of the page. Hence, the entire page must be devoted to the image in question. Subtitles or
descriptions must be rotated in the same way.

When images are presented this way, general margin requirements are preserved
and page numbers must appear normally.

All kinds of images, including appendices, must be numbered consecutively in their

type. Decimal system in numbering (Table 1.1, Table 1.2, …. Figure 1.1, Figure 1., ….,
A.1, A.2, …, first digit section or suffix; digit after decimal represents the number of that
section or attached image ) must be used.

Images can consist multiple pages. In such cases, the continuation page must
contain the number of the image and a note indicating its continuation. For example, it
must be written like “Table 1.2 (continued).”

Table title and figure captions must be the same as the font used in the text. The
characters must be written in 12 points. The characters in tables and figures can be reduced
to 8 points if there is insufficient space. Especially, axis scales, axis titles, explanations,
labels in graphics and diagrams must be 8 points.

Figures and photographs may be in color. Photographic images must be original or

consist of quality photographic copies of the original. Standard photocopies of photographs
are not accepted. Installation of images where necessary must be applied with a technique
(eg, dry montage or quality scanned photo or figure) that produces permanent and good
quality results. With dry mounting, the paper on which the photo is printed will not be
curled. Other methods such as library putty, rubber glue, spray mounting, or taping are not
acceptable. These methods are not permanent and the stickies used will corrode both the
paper and the photo in the long run.

If an audio-visual material (eg, video recording, cassette, etc.) is to accompany or

complement the text, it must be fully described in the text's entirety.

An electronic copy of the entire thesis in CD form must be submitted with each
copy of the thesis. Computer printouts must also be matched to the specified edge
dimensions. It must be dark and legible with high black and white contrast. Thesis must be
copied on quality paper.

4.2.3 Formula

Mathematical and chemical formulas, equations and expressions must be created by

computer equation editor or text sign language. If a resource is specified, they must carry a
numerical designation. Each equation must be numbered in parentheses adjacent to the
right edge. Like images, equation numbers must consist of two parts, the first part
represents the thesis chapter number or appendix number, and the next part represents the
equation number in the chapter or appendix.
4.2.4 Quotations

Short, and prose quotations must be placed in the text with three lines or less and
must be closed within two quotation marks. Quotations in the form of prose covering three
lines or more must be single spaced, with a paragraph indentation of at least 1 cm from the
left margin and without any quotation marks.

4.2.5 Footnotes and Endnotes

Footnotes are at the bottom of the pages, and endnotes are in the thesis sections.
The font of the footnotes and endnotes must be 10 points. Single spacing must be used for
footnotes and endnotes, and double spacing between each list. If placed at the bottom of
the page, footnotes must be separated from the text by a full horizontal line 4 mm above
the first line of the footnote.

Footnotes and endnotes must be numbered with Arabic numerals. At the end of the
sentence, it must be given as a small number above. The numbering used must be given
above the line.

4.2.6 Citations

One of the formats of APA (American Psychological Association), MLA (Modern

Language Association), Chicago or Harvard must be used for citations. Information about
which format must be used can be obtained from the Departments. The format used must
be applied consistently throughout the entire document. For more detailed information on
these formats, see Appendix A.

4.3 References

All references must be listed under the "REFERENCES" title at the end of the
thesis. All cited material in the text must be listed from A to Z in the reference list.

Similarly, all material used as a source must be included in the text. The References
section does not contain a chapter number. The page number must be written in the same
type size and font used throughout the thesis. References title must be centered around the
edges, without punctuation, and 6 cm below the top of the page. The list must start 1.5 cm
below. The source must be written in a single line spacing, with a 12 pt spacing between
the next and the next.

There is a format that is generally preferred to be used in the writing of the

references and it must be written in the chosen format (APA, MLA, Chicago or
Harvard). Information about which format must be used can be obtained from the
Departments. See Appendix A for bibliography lists.

4.4 Appendices

Some authors may wish to present certain texts of the thesis in the appendices
instead of including them in the main text. Appendices must be listed under the
“APPENDICES” title at the end of the thesis. For example, an appendix may contain test
forms, detailed equipment, comprehensive tables of raw data, computer programs, etc. may
contain.

If the information to be added requires more than one appendix, a letter must be
given for each (Appendix A, Appendix B, etc.). The title “Appendix A ……” must be
centered at the top of the page and must appear 6 cm below the top of the page. Each
attachment must have a descriptive title. For the subsections of the appendices, it can be
written as A.1, A.2, B.1, B.2, … etc. Type size and point size must be the same as used for
section titles.

The spaces do not need to be the same for each appendices. Documentation and
case studies may be monospaced. Spacing for descriptions of methods and procedures may
be similar to that in the text.

Similar to book chapters, each appendix with a title must be listed separately in the
Table of Contents.

All appendices must be in the type size and font which are used for page numbering
throughout the thesis.

If an appendix contains photocopied material, they must be photocopies which have

publication quality.

4.5 Curriculum Vitae (CV)

A CV is required for both master's and doctoral dissertations. It is a biography that

includes one or two paragraphs about the institutions that attended (post-secondary
education), his degrees and awards, his education and professional experience. It must be
written in short, concise and third person form. The title must be written as
"CURRICULUM VITAE” centered around the edges and placed 6 cm below the top of
the page. The text must start 1.5 cm below. The CV must be in the same type size and font
size as the other parts of the thesis. The CV must not be given a section number, it must be
indicated as the last item in the Table of Contents by giving a page number. See Appendix
A for CV format.
CHAPTER 5

5. THESIS DELIVERY AND GRADUATION PROCEDURES

5.1 Thesis (Cloth Bound) Delivery Procedures

• The student who is successful in the Master's Thesis Defense Exam delivers four
cloth bound theses, which he/she has prepared in accordance with the Thesis Writing
Guide, to the Institute within one month at the latest.

• The student submits five CDs with the bound theses to the Institute. CDs should be
written as seen in the example below (Figure 6.1). Each of these CDs contains PDF
files of the full text of the thesis and its appendices. In addition, the thesis signature
approval page on four CDs should be in its original place in the thesis with the
original signature. On one CD, the approval page must be unsigned. The full text of
the thesis should be saved in a single PDF file. The file must be uncompressed and
unencrypted.

• One original signed Thesis Signature Approval Page is delivered to the Institute.

• In order for each thesis to be forwarded to YÖK Thesis Center, the thesis author
must first click on the "Member Login" option from http://tez2.yok.gov.tr and log in
to the system with the e-government password and fill the Thesis Data Entry Form
on the page on the computer, then printed and delivered to the Institute with the
signed version. (The form is designed to transfer the information filled in by the
author to a temporary table linked to the Thesis Database. When the "OK" box is
clicked after completing the form, a printable form with the "Reference Number"
generated by the system is created. This form should be printed and signed and
submitted to the Institute together with the thesis. If, for any reason, an incorrect data
entry has been made, there is an opportunity to go back and correct it before printing
the form. However, if the error is noticed after the form is printed, a new form should
be filled and printed and the previous one should be cancelled. Since the Reference
Number on the form sent to YÖK will be valid during the data entry controls to be
made at the Thesis Center, this should be considered.)
You must submit the thesis to your institute along with the CD containing the full
text PDF file.

• In Işık University Library Thesis Data Entry and Publishing Permission Form,
the reference number in the Thesis Data Entry Form is written in the YÖK
Researcher No line and the form is submitted to the Institute.
• The original copy of the Plagiarism Software Program Report and Plagiarism
Form, signed by the thesis advisor and signed by the student before the defense, is
delivered to the Institute.

• Master Thesis Submission Form signed by the Thesis Advisor and the student,
the other forms mentioned above, and four cloth bound theses are delivered to the
Institute by the Head of the Department.

The thesis cannot be submitted with missing documents.

5.2 Graduation Procedures
The status of the student who has fully completed the Thesis (Cloth Bound) Delivery
Procedures mentioned above and whose thesis is found in accordance with the Thesis
Writing Guide in terms of form is discussed in the Institute Administrative Board and
a graduation decision is taken.
The student who has completed the above procedures can apply to the Student
Affairs to complete the dismissal process and obtain the Temporary Graduation
Certificate. Diplomas are not given before the graduation ceremony, only a
Temporary Graduation certificate is given.

There are many people who helped me make the most of my years and make them
worthwhile during my undergraduate studies. First of all, I would like to thank my
thesis/Project advisor Prof.………….. Having the chance to benefit from his
experience over the years has played a major role in my development. Also, I would
