The untold human suffering and property damage left in the wake of the
Fukushima disaster in Japan has been well-documented, but there's another population
that suffered greatly that few have discussed - the animals left behind in the radioactive
exclusion zone. One man, however, hasn't forgotten - 55-year-old Naoto Matsumura, a
former construction worker who lives in the zone to care for its four-legged survivors. He
is known as the "guardian of Fukushima's animals' because of the work he does to feed
the animals left behind by people in their rush to evacuate the government's 12.5-mile

time. There might be some homesickness. The best way to overcome this is not by sympathy
from home, but by working hard and sacrificing much to achieve some sort of standing
among the students.

The t’nalaki is a traditional cloth woven by the T’boli women of Lake of Sebu. It
represents birth, life and union in marriage and death. More importantly, it is sacred and the
symbol of T’boli pride and identity. Not only it is used as blanket and clothing; it is also used as
decorations in royal wedding ceremonies. As part of T’boli culture and tradition, t’nalak refers
the extraordinary skill of the people, reveals the tedious process of its making, and showcases
the designs that are uniquely T’boli.
Making the T’nalak is a skill that young T’boli women learn through their mothers,
grandmothers or even sisters. Most of the existing weavers today come from a generation of
t’nalak weavers that go back to their great ancestors. In their early years, the young T’boli
women are introduced to the process by first assisting the initial stages.
In the making of the t’nalak, the men of the household from the husbands down to the
sons take charge of the manual stripping of the abaca fibers at the outset and later, after the
t’nalak is done, the burnishing of the fabric. On the other hand, the women of the household
assume the responsibility of dyeing, weaving and tying of the knots – skills which could take
women one to five years to master. This production of the t’nalak indeed requires multiple
roles that contribute to its final output.
Making the t’nalak is a tedious process, depending on the length and the intricacy of the
pattern. T’nalak is made from natural abaca fibers and hand dyed using the ikat method with
pigments gathered from certain roots, leaves and bark of the “loko” plant and the “k’nalum”
tree. In its final stage, the surface of the t’nalak is coated with beeswax and burnished with a
cowry shell to give it a smooth sheen.
The T’boli women design the t’nalak without the use of drawn patterns or guides, but
instead rely on a mental image of the designs. Often times called the “dream weavers”, the
T’boli women believe that the patterns are bestowed on them through either their own
dreams, those from their ancestors or ones granted specially through “Fu Dalu,” the spirit of
the abaca. These designs are handed down or shared. Usually, a few of the original designs say
within a certain family while others are shared.
Today, the tradition of the t’nalak lives on through a few weavers that strive to
safeguard this tradition. While it continues to represent the tribe’s skill, industry, and
uniqueness, many factors affecting its production could lead to the extinction of a part of their
culture.
