What is Global Sustainability?

According to the Cambridge university press, Global Sustainability defines the conditions under

which humans and nature, societies and the biosphere, the world and the earth can co-exist in

ways that enable productive harmony, stability and resilience to support present and future

generations. Global Sustainability science explores interactions between social and natural

systems, from local to global scales, with a particular focus on sustainability as an avenue for

human development in the context of global environmental change and earth resilience.

When talking about sustainability, the human, social, economic and environmental factors are

considered as they explain the importance of sustainability and these include:

 It improves our standard of living

 It protects our ecological community and preserves natural resources for future

generation.

 It helps to save national budget

Sustainability practices allow organizations to reduce their negative effects on the environment

while the business still makes profitable returns. These practices enable people to live within the

means of natural systems (Environmental factors) while ensuring that the same lifestyle does not

negatively affect other people (Sociocultural factors).

CJ’s BUSINESS INITIATIVE – COFFEE SHOP cum RESTAURANT

The food business is a lucrative business in the hospitality industry and the importance of food to

mankind cannot be overemphasized.

Owning a coffee shop/restaurant business provides financial benefits to the owner and the

community at large which leads to goodwill and leadership opportunities in the community.

I am a native of Ibusa in Delta state, South South of Nigeria, West Africa.

I would propose that CJ establishes a coffee shop/restaurant in Ibusa, as currently, there are no

coffee shops around and the closest available restaurants are quite distant from the community;

the people of Ibusa are good farmers and also well known for their quality agriculture products,

like poultry, piggery, grains, cassava, cocoa etc. they usually have to travel long distances to sell

their products to business owners and in the open market in neighboring communities.

The sustainability practices that CJ would apply to this initiative are such that would enable him

consider the environmental, social, economic and cultural factors of sustainability.

These practices include;

 CJ would source for his raw materials such as cocoa, grains, protein, vegetables, etc.

from the local farmers in the community

 CJ would provide employment for the indigenes in the community thereby fostering job

growth.

 CJ can equip the people with culinary skills from different cultures and backgrounds,

exposing them to a new lifestyle.

 CJ would provide affordable and quality meals to the community.

 The restaurant would help bring the people of the community together.

In recent times, people would rather pay for sustainability than just for the bill of their meals.

Sustainability heavily influences people’s decisions when eating out as they would easily choose

a restaurant that offers sustainable dining to one who does not. Restaurant sustainability entails
minimizing the impact of food business on the environment, especially resolving issues like

reducing their supply chain, recycling, packaging, food wastage, water and energy consumption,

etc. When this happens, CJ would not only be helping the environment but will be giving the

customers the opportunity to contribute to these positive efforts.

Some benefits of sustainability in restaurants/coffee shops include: Brand loyalty, increase in

customer-base, increased profits and recovered costs, employee engagement, improved

awareness and improved supply chain. All these can be achieved if CJ minimizes carbon mileage

by using more of local suppliers; remembers to recycle; reduces food waste; adds more

vegetarian and vegan options; upgrades his equipment to be eco-friendly; amongst others.

CJ’s commitment to sustainability will make his business stand out.
