A Writer’s Book

“What?!” He exclaimed which made her face looked sour. She wasn’t in the mood to
deal with men specially at 10:32 in the morning wherein her day barely starts.

“No need to shout. You can just reject me or something. Thank you for wasting my
time.” She plainly said and turned her body around. As she raised her right foot to walk
away, the guy already grabbed her wrist and forcefully turn her around, facing him.

“I was just…I mean- ugh. Okay. Fine. I’ll be your little experiment.” He sighed, as if
already regretting his decision. But the gloom on his face became darker when he saw her
uninterested eyes. As if she already knew that he’ll agree with her anyways.

“Okay. Meet me here tomorrow. 10:40pm. Same spot.” She said and completely release
herself from his grip. When she didn’t receive an answer, she walked away and grabbed
her things on the table that was placed on the very corner of the coffee shop. A typical
spot for those stereotyped writers and readers that we knew from the movies and books.

With everything in her white tote bag that was strapped on her right shoulder, it was
easier for her to hold her not-so-warm coffee on her left hand and her phone and book
drafts on her right hand. She walked past the barista who just shook his head as he, once
again, saw her asked a guy to join her little experiment. And once again, he walked to the
guy who was standing frozen on his spot, staring at emptiness. He tapped his shoulders to
bring him to life and pointed at the glass window wherein one can clearly see her putting
her things inside her mini cooper. She didn’t even try to look back and just went inside
her car. The barista almost chokes on his saliva when he saw the guy froze for the second
time.

“What the hell was that?! Who is she? What the fuck is this experiment thing? Did she
just manipulate me? Oh god!” The barista sigh and went back to his post. This dude is
impossible. He thought.

“Wait- you knew her? Right?” The barista did not care to raise his head to the man on the
counter.

“Hey uh, Eric! You know her, right? That girl with a long black hair wearing a plain shirt
and shorts. The one who looked really weird-“

“Maddie. Her name is Maddie. I don’t know if we should call her weird but I guess,
being a writer is weird, for normal people. And no, I don’t personally know her. She’s
just one of the few customers who keep this small business running. Did I answer all
your questions, Randy?” Eric gave Randy a huge sarcastic smile. He didn’t like that.

“Oh, um. Thanks. Sorry umm, sorry for the uh…sorry!” Randy quickly ran away from
that place as far as he could.

“A new book…huh.” Eric, on the other hand, told himself as he wipes the huge bookshelf
on the very center of his small shop. A small smirk formed on his face as he looked back
and traced Randy’s shadows on the streets.

“How’s Eric?” Maddie’s roommate welcomed her. She’s not actually a roommate, she’s
just someone who got a duplicate of her keys and always let herself in in her apartment.

“Still a barista. Hey, can you please move your feet away? It stinks.” She gave her a
disgusting look and push her leg away from her bed.
“Oh, writing for a new book, huh. I like that. Who’s the next experiment?” Maddie rolled
her eyes and shrugged her shoulders.

“I’m kinda hating the female lead already. Geez. How can she be so cold and bored.”
Maddie rolled her eyes as she gulped down the rest of her now cold coffee.

“No. I don’t have anything in mind for now. I’m meeting the new experiment tomorrow
evening. I’m in a slump, you know?” Her roommate just nodded her head with an o-
shaped mouth.

“Ah, this is natural Maddie. I see. I hope you’ll include your bestie named Alex in your
next story.” She just rolled her eyes, again, and lay her body on her bed.

A huge sigh came out of her mouth.

“Okay. What did you do this time, normal Maddie?” Alex asked, standing beside her.

“I don’t know. I wanted to write a story but I don’t know what to write. I have this urge
to sit on my spot and type some words but nothing came out. I’ve been like this for
almost 10 months, 21 days, and 17 seconds now. 18.” She then covered her face with her
hands as if she was crying. But Alex just rolled her eyes and take her hands away.

“That’s what we call moving on, okay? It’s okay to do other things Maddie.
