VOCABULARY PHRASE USAGE

कर रही kar rahii means "doing." It comes from the verb karna, which means "to do."

HINDIPOD101.COM LOWER BEGINNER S1 #17 3

We can change the verbs into their present continuous form by adding rahi to the root of the verb. So to
say "going," we add rahi to the root of the verb jaana. So it becomes ja rahi.

अ ा! achha! means "good," but it can also be used as an interjection to express surprise or
acknowledgement.

सबसे अ ा sabse achha. It is a phrase which means "the best of all." So if we say सबसे अ ा घर sabse achha
ghar, it means "the best house of all."

It changes according to the number and gender of the noun. So achha changes into achhi if the noun
following it is feminine.

For example, we'd say सबसे अ घड़ी sabse achhi ghadii, which means "the best watch of all."

खेलता khelTa means "plays." It comes from the verb "khelna," which means "to play."

Similarly, we could add Ta/Ti/Te to the root of the verb to make it into present tense.

For example, to say "he goes," we'd say vah jaata hai. We add ta to the root of the verb jaana, which
means "to go."

Another example would be main khaaTi hoon to mean "I eat" (said by a female).

GRAMMAR
The Focus of this Lesson is Learning Superlatives in Hindi.
स चन त लकर! वह ब त अ ा खेलता है।
Sachin Tendulkar! vah bahuT acchaa kheLaTa hai.
"Sachin Tendulkar! He plays really well."

Superlatives are formed by adding सबसे sabse before the head noun. For example, we could add सबसे
sabse before the adjective सु दर sunDar, which means "pretty." So together it becomes sabse sundar,
which means "prettiest of all."

Similarly, we could add sabse to the adjective chhota, and together, it becomes सबसे छोटा sabse chhota,
which means "shortest of all."

To compare two nouns, for example, if A is as good as B, you use equative structures, which are formed
by adding jaisa. For example, if you want to say Arti is as intelligent as Kate, we could say आरती के ट जैसी
समझदार है| aarTii ket jaisi samajhDar hai.

jaisa is similar to "like" in English and must agree with the head noun in gender and number. We have to
take into consideration the gender and number of the subject and not the noun we are comparing it to.

So when we say, "This box is as big as those boxes," the head noun is a box which is "singular" and
"masculine" in gender.

So the sentence becomes यह ड बा उन ड ब जैसा बड़ा है| yah dabba un dabbon jaisa bada hai

Sometimes we also use the terms ek jaisa/ek jaisi:

For example, we could say यह जुड़वाँ बहने एक जैसी ह yah judwa bahne ek jaisi hain, which means "These twin
sisters are alike."

Sample Sentences

1. माउ ट एवरे ट सबसे ऊंचा पहाड़ है

Maunt aevrest sabse oonCHa pahaad hai.
"Mt. Everest is tallest of all the mountains."
2. यह कमरा होटल के कमरे जैसा अ ा है
Yah kamraa hotal ke kamre jaisa achha hai.
"This room is as good as a hotel room."

Examples from this Dialogue

1. सबसे अ ा खलाड़ी कौन है?

Sabse achha khilaadii kaun hai?
"Who is the best cricketer?"
