INTRODUCTION
In the Direct Method, the need to take the compass azim uth o f the
first star was an extra step in the non-simultaneous observations o f two
stars, one not required in the St. H ila ire Method. M oreover navigators have
com plained o f the difficu lties in taking the bearing o f a star at high
altitudes. Th e accuracy o f such an azimuth is thus liable to error.
Considering that the non-sim ultaneous observation o f stars is the most
com m on procedure in celestial navigation, one must realise that in the
procedure o f correcting the altitude o f the first star w ith the above form ula
(using Tables IV A and B ) an error o f 1" in the observed azim uth can
produce an error in the corrected altitude o f 1', leading to a possible
position error o f greater than 1 nautical m ile. Th is is because the error in
altitude o f the first star (d H o ,) is reflected both in angle B and in the
parallactic angle n i; and the error in the parallatic angle (d m ) is fu rther
reflected both in the com puted Latitu d e (L a t) and in the L ocal Hour A n gle
o f the second star (L H A .,), i.e. in the Longitude. Th e fo llo w in g form ulae

These form u lae w ere derived in the present author’s earlier w ork
“N ew Methods of Ship Position Findin g from Celestial O bservations” (1955)
[3 ]. As was noted on pages 158-159 (in Serbo-Croat language) o f the
second edition (1973), an error o f + 1' in H ox leads to an error in Latitude
o f — If 1, and in L H A 2 to an error o f + 0'2 in Longitude.
It is im portant to note that w ith the new procedure here described
fo r direct com putation there is no possibility of such azim uth errors, since
the need to take the first star’s compass azimuth and to make the
corresponding correction to its altitude based on this azim uth have both
been elim inated. Thus the au xiliary Tables IV A and B are no longer
necessary. Instead, the new procedure introduces corrections fo r the
coordinates o f the observer’s zenith (the Latitude and L H A A ries) taken
directly fro m the M ain Tables in K n . T h is correction is based on a single
argum ent, i.e. the elapsed tim e between sights o f the firs t and the second
star. It is obtained fro m Table IV C as a correction fo r the change in
difference o f sidereal hour angles (diff. S H A ) o f the two stars w ith its sign,
w hich is m ultiplied (through Table V - M ultiplication T a b le) by the correc
tion indices (given in the Main Tables) to allow for a change o f sidereal
hour angles (IS U ).
Table IV C and an exam ple of this m ethod o f com puting a fix are
shown below in detail. F irstly, however, it must be shown w h y the
correction of the first star’s altitude fo r the elapsed tim e is identical w ith
the correction to the Latitude and L H A Aries, both representing the sidereal
hour angle difference fo r the tim e elapsed between the two star sights.
As is w ell known, the difference between the sidereal hour angles o f
tw o stars is num erically equal to the difference between their Greenwich
hour angles (SHAj^ — S H A 2 = GH Aj — G H A 2). A ccordingly, i f 2 m 4 s has
elapsed between observations of the firs t and the second star then an
increm ent o f 31'1 o f GH A A ries is obtained from the Nautical Almanac.
This indicates that the Greenwich hour angle o f the first star has been
sim ilarly increased; consequently the difference between Greenwich hour
angles fo r these two stars amounts to the same value. T h e result w ould
be the same if the difference between sidereal hour angles o f these stars
w ere changed by the same amount o f 31'1. Thus corrections to the
coordinates o f the observer’s zenith, i.e. corrections to the Latitu de and
L H A A ries (Lon gitu d e), can be computed to allow for the change in L H A
o f the first star in the same m anner as fo r the change in its sidereal hour
angle. It w ill how ever be necessary to pay attention to the signs o f the
Lat. and L H A A ries corrections since in Tables K n the indices o f the
corrections fo r changes in difference o f sidereal hour angles (the ISU
indices) are tabulated fo r + 1' increments o f tabulated difference o f sidereal
hour angles (S H A ! — S H A 2), always provided that declinations and altitudes
of both stars rem ain unchanged. Furtherm ore, the elapsed tim e between
sights o f the first and the second star transform ed w ith the help o f the
N autical Alm anac into an increm ent o f G H A Aries — this is seen in the
sky as apparent m otion of the star from East to W est — can be expressed
as an increase or decrease in the m eridian angle o f the first star, depending
on its azimuth. This means an increase or decrease in the first star’ s
altitude, and consequently the conditions em ployed when tabulating the
sign fo r ISU indices are not the same. Hence, Latitude and L H A A ries
corrections for increase o f Greenwich hour angle of the firs t star w ill not
always have the same sign as that of the increase in the difference o f
tabulated sidereal hour angles SH A , — S H A 2. I f ISU indices fo r L at and
L H A corr., w ith their signs, are em ployed then the sign for the correction
to the difference o f sidereal hour angles must also be known, so it is now7
given above the tabulations in Table IV C. W ith the elapsed time as the
entering argument, the num erical value is found. F rom a study of the
celestial sphere a very sim ple rule fo r this sign has been drawn up. This
is : the sign fo r corr. diff. SHA is always + , excepi when the first s t a r is
west o f the second one, w hen it w ill be — . Compass azimuths of stars are
not necessary fo r this purpose because in the Main Tables K lt the azimuths
are tabulated below the star names. Thus at a glance it can be seen i f
A Z j is greater than AZ.,; it is evident also from the star observations
w hether the first star is west or eastward of the second one.
T a b le IV C therefore yields corr. diff. SHA w ith its sign, and this has
to be algebraically added to the value diff. SHA w hich has been obtained
by subtracting the (S H A ] — S H A L.) value shown at the top o f the pages in
Main Tables K ,, from the (S H A , — S H A 2) value read from the Nautical
Alm anac, in order to determ ine a final diff. SHA. B y application o f the
ISU indices from the Main Tables fo r Lat. corr. and L H A corr., this final
diff. S IIA yields corrections to both Latitude and L H A Aries, w ith their
signs; the m ultiplication Ta b le V is used for this operation.
T h e above explanations m ay seem complicated to a m ariner, but they
are intended p rim a rily fo r those interested in m aking a deeper study o f
navigational methods, In fact, the advantage of the im proved m ethod is
lhat the m ariner has no need to go into the theory because the Instructions
fo r Use together w ith the solution o f an exam ple printed at the end o f the
present paper enable an easy understanding o f this com putational method
fo r a fix. Th e use of Tables K n is fu rth er facilitated by a cardboard insert
o f the Instructions fo r Use, including a sample solution printed in five
colours.
T h e exam ple given on page 105 o f m y 1971 paper [2 ] shows that fo r
the tim e elapsed between observations o f Antares and Vega the correction
o f the first star’s altitude was 21'1 (see Table IV A and B ), w ith as entering
argum ents the true azim uth o f Antares (136” ) and the dead reckoning
latitude (12°.2). Th is correction (diff. Ho, = + 21'1 ) when m ultiplied by
the tabulated indices IV , (Indices o f corrections to the Latitude and Local
Hour A ngle o f Aries fo r a change o f + V in the first star’s altitude) yields
the fo llow in g corrections to the Latitude and L H A A ries ;

From the Nautical Almanac with approx. GMT and D.R. Longitude the
approx. L H A y 203° is obtained. W ith this and approx. Lat. 42° N the
Tables K u are opened and the pair o f stars SPICA - REGULUS chosen fo r
observation. The sights are taken, firstly on Spica hs! 37°19'1, chrono
meter time C T X 18h 55m45.5s, then on Regulus hs2 36°30f7, CT2 18h 57m26.58.
Chronometer error on GMT is + 2m 19.5e. Spica’s heading angle (azim uth
relative to course) is 16°. Index correction o f the sextant is 0, height o f
eye 11m. Find a F ix at the time of the second sight.
