INTRODUCTION GO KL CITY BUS
Go KL City Bus is a free bus service in the city center of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Previously
managed by Land Public Transport Commission (SPAD), the services were taken over by Kuala
Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) by 1 January 2019. In line with the National Land Public Transport
Master Plan, the implementation of public transport initiatives is important to reduce the use of
private vehicles on the road which can reduce carbon emissions in big cities like Kuala Lumpur.
Starting from February 2021, 24 electric buses have been added to GO KL City Bus services
with the aim of enhancing the operation (Mohamad, 2021). Along with that, the utilization of
electric buses can reduce carbon emissions in KL city. Go KL City Bus provides 11 different
routes that can cater to the demands of public transport users in Kuala Lumpur.
3 ASPECTS OF SUSTAINABLE URBAN TRANSPORT
SOCIAL
Go KL City Bus provides a reliable, safe and affordable transportation option for
citizens of Kuala Lumpur. This bus service accommodates thousands of users who
work in education, healthcare, and other essential industries in Kuala Lumpur
which is important to social development. This bus also functions as a feeder to
the Mass Rapid Transit (MRT), Light Rail-Transit (LRT) and other train services.
ECONOMIC
Go KL City Bus also contributed to the economic development of Kuala Lumpur.
This bus service brings a lot of benefits. By providing a conducive and effective
ride to the user, this bus service can encourage more citizens to use public
transport. This situation can reduce traffic congestion issues in big cities like
Kuala Lumpur. When the traffic is smooth, the logistics and supply chain sector
can be improved.
ENVIRONMENT
The Go KL City bus played an important role in reducing greenhouse gas and
carbon emissions in Kuala Lumpur. Electric vehicles are not producing carbon. It
can decrease the carbon emissions index in Kuala Lumpur city. Replacing the
traditional internal combustion engines (ICE) with electrical battery-driven vehicle
(EV) technology is encouraging more and more countries (Nur Ayeesha et al,
2022)

GO KL CITY BUS RELEVANCE ON SDG
By reducing air pollution, Go KL City Bus improved public health
issues of Kuala Lumpur citizens.
GO KL City Bus provides conducive and affordable transportation to
Kuala Lumpur citizens.
Go KL City Bus used 24 electric buses and DBKL announce will fully
utilized electric bus by end of 2023. This effort helps to reduce carbon
emissions which lead to climate change.
Reduce traffic congestion, accident rate and carbon emissions in
Kuala Lumpur city.
GO KL City Bus is a collaborative effort between Government
Agencies, Private Companies and citizens in achieving sustainable
development goals. This partnerships can achieve the aspiration of
making Kuala Lumpur as a Smart City.
PROJECT ACCEPTABILITY
Go KL City Bus service received various responses from users. Many users give their
review that frequency of bus is consistence and arrive at the destination on time. Second,
this bus service is free of charge. This is government’s effort to encourage public using
public transport
PROJECT VIABILITY
Public Transportation services in big cities are seen as having great potential and can last
a long time in line with rapid development, However, according to Ceccato (2017), if public
transport is not safe, women’s mobility is impaired. So, the service provider should make a
big effort to strengthen the safety issues in their service. Other than safety issues, this bus
service brings a lot of benefits to the economic, social and environment.
PROJECT ADAPTABILITY
Go KL City Bus service provider tries to adapt to user demands. This bus service provides
a comprehensive route to the user. The 11 routes cover all residential areas in Kuala
Lumpur. This bus service also provide easy accessibility for the disabled, such as
wheelchair ramps.
CONCLUSION
In conclusion, an electric bus project can contribute significantly to several SDGs,
especially those related to climate action, sustainable cities, and health. However,
successful implementation requires a holistic approach, considering environmental, social,
and economic factors, along with supportive policies and infrastructure development.
