Research question:

In what ways did British influence lead to the independence of Latin American states in the 19 th century?

Briefly explain why you have chosen this question and topic.

Having such a diverse cultural background with influences from Spain, the Middle East and Latin America has resulted
in me having a natural interest for history and politics. Therefore, when I was given the chance to develop this project, I
instantly knew it would be a historical essay. For my topic, I have decided to research the ways in which British influence
led to the independence of Latin American states in the 19th century. This is a topic I am passionate about as it combines
two areas of study I enjoy researching: the British Empire and Latin America. With my essay, I expect to shine a light on
some of the factors driven by the British that might have influenced these independence movements. In addition, I will
also investigate why the British became interested in this region in the first place and how helping these Latin American
countries achieve independence might have been useful for their imperial interests. For this I will analyse the differences
between the Spanish and the British Empires since understanding what makes them different will make it easier to
understand why the British acted the way they did in the Americas.

To broaden my knowledge on this topic, I plan to conduct research in the following ways. I expect to read literature on
the topic and question and log it into a spreadsheet where I can keep a record of the different things I read. Additionally,
I will be engaging with primary sources I will look for in archives such as letters, speeches, or documents from the time.
This will enable me to have a better understanding of the way events played out. My command of the Spanish language
will also prove to be useful during this investigation as it will give me the chance to expand and read a wider range of
sources written in their original version when examining the Latin American perspective. Exploring different sources will
allow me to get a glimpse of first hand accounts of the events.
Outline the main sources of information you have identified for the project.

I will read literature about the topic including articles from the Journal of Latin American Studies and other books such as
Rory Miller’s Britain and Latin America in the 19th and 20th Centuries Studies In Modern History. I will also read
about the so called libertadores such as Bernardo O’Higgins or Simon Bolivar to ger an insight on both
perspectives: the British side and the Latin American side to ensure that my investigation is as objective as it can
be.
