Grouped under the IACS, the International Association of Classification Societirs, the

Classification society Looks after the techinical condition of the ship, the Flagstate, the people on
board and the safety, enviroment and communication. The society aproves the drawings, looks
after the construction, the strength and quality of materials and the workers on the ship and issue
a certificate upon the construction. The Certificate of Class is the base for underwrite to insure a
ship.

)The Annex I is about prevent polluition by oil at the sea. It regulate how the ships must operate
for protect the marine enviroment from large amounts of oil being dropped on it.

The Annex II is about the chemical polluition, that are the noxious liquids. This annex separet the
substances by theirs risck for the enviroment and regulate the operations and requirements to the
ships carring each categorie of substance. This annex divides the ships in Types I, II and III and
defines which type of substance eachy type of ship can have as cargo.

The Annex III is about the carriage of packed harmful substances. It determine that how to labell
the packages, the packing, the stowage requirements and quantity limitations.

The Annex IV regulates the prevention of polluition by sewage and the contents from the ship’s
hospital. Determine how to discharge treated or untreated sewage and where. This annex also
determine special areas where the discharge of sewage is not allowed.

The Annex V prevents the Polluition by Garbage, that is all kinds of domestic and operational
waste determining what to do with each type of waste (carton, plastic, etc).

The Annex VI is about the air poluition by nitrogen oxides and sulphur oxides originated in the
combustion of fuels.

One more annex deal with the ballast water, which can take organisms from one ecosytem from
another, what is a big enviromental risk.
