I stepped into the room and to my horror, I could hear it getting closer, each footstep

shaking the house apart, until there was no noise to be heard. The silence was worse
than the footsteps, for I didn’t know what was coming next. Suddenly, icy fingers
grasped my shoulder whilst I stood there in panic, only for me to realise it was my
mum telling me dinner was ready. I looked at her blankly as if I had been woken up
from a nightmare until I gathered my senses and sat down for dinner. A blue glint
beamed out at me from my dinner and it was evident that there was some sort of pill
hidden in my food as usual.

I removed it from my plate since it ruined the taste of the food, although it did help
stop the banging noises. Once I went to bed, my head began throbbing immensely as if
my head was being crushed into a small ball. I tossed and turned, sweat compiling on
my forehead and rolling down the sides of my face. The sky outside was pitch black
and it was evident that any sleep tonight would be rare. I missed the chirping of the
birds and the Sun’s rays permeating my window in the morning in contrast to the
terrifying and miserable darkness that seemed to envelope the world at night. The
scent of bread and coffee in the morning fills my nostrils and provides me with joy
whereas smell of the cold night air only reminds you of the darkness of night.

I walked towards the kitchen, grabbing a glass of water and sipping on the cold fluid in
small sips. Knocking then echoed around the house, making me jump and drop the
glass that resided in my hand, shattering on impact of the tiled floor. My eyes darted
towards the front door while a long and shapeless shadow lurked outside, dashing past
windows and lights. And then it knocked again. KNOCK, KNOCK, KNOCK. I grasped the
edges of the counter and my breathing paced faster. KNOCK, KNOCK, KNOCK. It wasn’t
knocking anymore, the thing in front of the door was now slamming its fist into the
door as if it was trying to break it down.

My legs were frozen in place, unable to move despite my brain wishing to run away
and cower. KNOCK, KNOCK, KNOCK. I finally removed myself from my daze and
sprinted towards the bathroom and opened the door. I quickly slammed the door shut
and struggled to lock the door with my hands shivering in fear. I slammed my fist on
the bathroom door out of anger, the pain of the hard wooden door radiating through
my entire right arm. I locked the door just in time to hear the front door come crashing
down.

My ears pricked up and my eyes enlarged now knowing the being was inside the
house. Its footsteps were loud and uneven, as if it was kicking the floor instead of
stepping. I could tell it was now in the kitchen and silence filled the air. My own hand
covered my mouth to silence my breathing as I crouched down with one hand on the
sink. Terror was drawn all over my face, what happened after the silence was
something I never found out. Boom, BOOM, BOOM. It was now pelting at full speed
towards the bathroom while screams escaped from my mouth. SLAM, SLAM, SLAM. It
was now kicking the door down.

My hands grasped my head and I curled into a ball on the ground. SLAM, SLAM, SLAM.
I closed my eyes awaiting my painful fate. The door broke in and I looked up with
fright-filled eyes to my mother standing over me. “Are you okay, I heard glass break
and saw broken glass on the kitchen floor.” Did she not hear the thing breaking the
door down and coming at me? That’s when her look of confusion transformed into a
look of dread. “You haven’t been eating the have you, the pills,” she screamed. Why
was she caring about the pills right now? She clutched her head in fear and left the
bathroom, shouting “No, no, no, no” constantly, leaving me in the bathroom.
