WH AT YOU SHOULD BE
TALK ING ABOUT THIS MONTH…
“New world league has
to live up to big promises”
YOU CAN understand some of the
frustrations from outside the world’s
established powerhouse nations.
For what has previously been called
Tier Two nations, everyone wants
promotion and relegation now. But
in the establishment of a new global
competition (that has no official name
yet), World Rugby are promising a lot.
Here’s what they say we will get in
men’s Test rugby from 2026: in every
second year, between Rugby World
Cups and Lions tours, there will be
two leagues of 12. There will be no
promotion-relegation until 2030. The
top division will be made up of the
Six Nations and Rugby Championship
sides, plus two more – believed to be
Fiji and Japan, but not nailed on yet… New challenge

breaks Welsh hearts In this match Ireland lost their eighth
quarter-final and saw their 17-Test
winning run terminated in a worldie of a
game. In a late siege, Jordie Barrett held
Rónan Kelleher up over the line and a
final attack spanning 5min 19sec ended
with Sam Whitelock winning a penalty.
Ireland didn’t have one scrum put-in.
Magic moment Will Jordan’s 28th try
in 29 Tests was classic All Blacks. From
off-the-top lineout ball, Richie Mo’unga
exploited a dog-leg and Jordan took the
scoring pass to fly in from 26 metres.

going at it. What an atmosphere, what a
game, what a tournament to be part of.”

World Rugby needs a bold new look in the pool stage
to its administration, it needs to have
commissioners for competitions instead
of hoary committees, and it also needs
outside experts in various fields, notably
in marketing and communications; it
must be said, the relatively small
number of communications people
employed by World Rugby really do
deserve gold medals of their own.
And so the governing body needs
more experts, as well as the
disbandment of the World Rugby
Council which has the power to knock
back any sort of new look or initiative.
And finally, the number of people
representing the Old Guard Unions
within World Rugby must be reduced in
proportion, so that this faction lose their
control of the game. Don’t worry, no one
is going to shove them away as long as
they embrace the whole sport.
And the successor to Beaumont?
Again, so vital for World Rugby and also
for Rugby World Cup. John Jeffrey, the
former Scotland flanker, has named
himself as a candidate and from all the
whispers that you hear from within the

The longer your levers are, generally
the longer you’ll be able to kick a ball,
so smaller players should try to have
strong legs, working on their squats
and hamstring exercises.
One thing I can struggle with is focus.
So if I go out just to kick for the sake
of it, I’ll sometimes lose concentration
and start missing. So I like to keep it
to a ten-kick or 12-kick challenge. If I’m
