It was November and they had to prepare for winter, but it was very difficult to find food. It
was very cold and many people got sick or died.
Spring came and one day, Samoset, a leader of an Indian tribe, and his friend Squanto
visited the settlers. Squanto helped the settlers grow corn, use fish to fertilize their fields and
catch animals.
Then summer came and then fall. The pilgrims could have their first harvest. It was rich. So,
they decided to celebrate it with a feast. To thank the Indians, they invited them to come and
celebrate with a big meal. There was a lot of turkey, corn, fish fruit and pumpkin pie.
Since then, every year, they celebrated their harvest with a thanksgiving meal.
In 1863, President Lincoln made Thanksgiving an official holiday in the USA.
It is celebrated on the fourth Thursday in November and includes the original food.
