This Electronic Document Preparation and Management (EDPM), School Based Assessment

(SBA) is based on the topic: “Child labour”

After intensive research on the topic mentioned above, the researcher stumbled upon a lot of

evidences that child labour is still present in Guyana.

In addition, the researcher also noted in her research the causes, effects and solutions of child

labour in Guyana.

When child labour is employed”
According to United State Department of Labour during an investigation carried out in Guyana

several years ago, “children in Guyana continues to engage in the worst forms of child labour; including

mining and commercial sexual exploitation, sometimes as a result of human trafficking.” To, this day

child labour continues to be a disease affecting human development. In a similar article on the convention

of on the Rights of a Child, it is known that, “A child is anyone below the age of 18 years old”. Labour,

on the other hand, is calculated as work, especially physical work. (Source Wikipedia.com)

Children are often times required to relinquish their childhood ambitions to take on adult

responsibilities. Though unfortunate, children are converted into breadwinners in the home. In

more severe cases children are forced to become care takers and providers within the family. There

are several causes of child labour, these are:

- Poverty, “is a state of being extremely poor, is proven to be one of the main causes of child

labour , it is the state of lacking sufficient money to live at a standard considered

comfortable or normal in society.” The illusion is that child labour will eradicate poverty;

however, “child labour” and poverty are inevitably bound together. If you use the labour of

children as a treatment for the social disease of poverty, you will have both poverty and

child labour to the end of time”, Grace Abbott. (pinterest.com).

- Additionally, the lack of meaningful alternatives, such as affordable schools and quality

education, is another major factor driving children to engage in child labour. Children work

because they have nothing better to do.

- Another cause of child labour exists within cultures, particularly where the informal

economy and small household businesses thrive. The cultural tradition is that children

follow in their parents' footsteps; child labour then is a means to learn and practice that

trade from a very early age. Similarly, in many cultures the education of girls is less valued

or girls are simply not expected to need formal schooling, and these girls pushed into child

labour such as providing domestic services.

Children affected by child labour suffer tremendous loses. There are several effects of child labour

and they are:

- There is the genuine loss of quality childhood, which includes time for recreation,

education, religion, etc.

- In order to maintain good mental wellbeing, children should be given the opportunity to

enjoy every stage of their development.

- Child labour can also lead to health complications due to undernourishment and poor

working conditions.

- Victims of child labour also suffer mental trauma, it is not a pleasant experience to be kept

working as a child while your age mates are out playing and going to school.

- The children that are employed do not have the time to go to school. They spend a lot of

time in their work stations as the days and years go by, hence they are illiterate.

In keeping with the reduction and further prevention of child labour it is important that individuals

consider the importance of developing suitable legislation or policies against child labour. Some

solutions of child labour are:

- There must be strong penalties meted out to employers who give work to children in

exchange for money.

- Children should also be given the opportunity of free education with the availability of

study materials, example text books and internet access.

- Increasing the wages of employees can also bring an end to the frequency of child labour.

Individuals will have enough money to provide the basic needs of each family member,

thus there will be no need for another bread winner in the home.

- Family planning also helps to ensure that the family is not burdened by children. Parents

should only be allowed to give birth to children they can provide for.

The Ministry of Social Protection in collaboration the Ministry of Labour and the Child Care and

Protection Agency all work tirelessly to reduce the frequency of child labour. These organizations

come together and hold workshops to create awareness on the topic. Additionally, there is constant

monitoring of business places to ensure employees are not underage. It is therefore the hope that

one day child labour will no longer be a leading cause of school drop and other delinquent practice.

The graph above demonstrates the results of the research conducted by UNICEF in Guyana in
2013 most recently, to find out the average amount of male or female that is engaged in Child
Labour. However, upon doing this survey they stumbled upon 47% of female engaged in
Child Labour due to the main cause of Poverty they highlighted, also there are other reasons
why females engage in Child Labour and that’s because of cultural reason, lack of
meaningful alternative and many others. While on the other hand, there was a unanimous
increase in Child Labour for the male district of the research. 53% of males are engaged in
Child Labour in Guyana, some causes of males relying on child labour is also because of
poverty in order to manage or sustain their family. However, this is because of lack of
finance, the government in collaboration with the Child Care and Protection Agency is still
trying to eradicate Child Labour now and also plans for the future, they are also
implementing strict and severe consequences for in individuals that still give jobs to children
instead of trying to get them to go to school.
