Lesson 6
LETTER WRITING
INFORMAL LETTERS

Informal letters are the letters written to friends, parents, relatives and acquaintances.

The Content of an informal letter is as follows:

1. The top right-hand corner contains your address followed by the date
2. The salutation (i.e. the start of the letter) is on the left below the level of the date
The salutation is always “Dear” followed by the name of the person you are writing to.
Note also that it is followed by a comma.
3. A series of paragraph follows, each detailing with a particular topic.
4. Finish the letter with a phrase such as “love”, “Best Wishes”, or “Write Soon” and then
sign your name underneath.

The Style of an informal letter is as follows:

1. Informal language (such as “don’t”) is usual and slang phrases are allowed.
2. The salutation just gives the recipient’s first name and you sign with just your first name.
3. Errors in grammar, punctuation and spelling will probably be ignored by the recipient.
Similarly, writing in “non-sentences” is often acceptable.
4. If handwriting the letter, consider beginning each paragraph on a new line and indenting
it. If typing the letter, consider leaving a blank line between each paragraph and not
indenting.

Letter for Discussion

Block 12, # 12-21

Yishun Street 2
Singapore 340012
19th February 2015

Dear Carl,

Hi! My name is Sharon, I am a Chinese girl of 14 and I am a secondary two student of

Venture Secondary School. I came across your name in the pen pal column of the TEENS”

magazine and I am writing to you because I have always wanted a pen pal in Australia.

Now let me tell you a little about my hobbies. I like to listen to pop songs, especially

Japanese songs and I am a great fan of Seiko Matsuda and the Sojo-Tai. I also like to collect

their posters and photos to stick on my school file. My athletic condition qualifies me for

almost every sport but I am hopeless at indoor games. Recently, I took up wind-surfing and I

21
FACULTY OF ISLAMIC BUSINESS
UNIVERSITAS POTENSI UTAMA December 30, 1899

am picking it up very fast. Another thing I like to do when I am free is going to the movies.

Occasionally, I also go shopping with my friends and buy a lot of “junk” home. You will find

me a valuable chemist should you need one, considering the face that I am a faithful member

of the school’s Math and Science Society.

Well, jokes aside, I am just an ordinary teenager. Still, let me attempt to describe myself

to you but I must tell you beforehand that I am not very good at it. I am of medium build and

my height is about 165cm. I have short hair which is brownish. No, I did not put my head in

an oven – it could be due to the effect of chlorine because I sometimes go swimming in the

pool. I also wear glasses but hope to switch to contact lenses soon. As for my completion, it

is almost perfect except for a few pimples on my face.

I come from a happy middle-income family. My father is a car salesman and my mother

is a housewife. My brother Alex is a student at the Singapore Polytechnic and I also have a

younger sister Nancy who is quite precocious. Although she is at primary school, she finds

Enid Blyton too childish and loves book by Judy Blume. Oh yes, we have also got a puppy

named Smoky. Generally, we get along pretty well with one another.

I am very interested in knowing more about your hobbies. What kind of martial art do you

learn and how did you become a part-time model? Also, I would like to know about your

school and your family.

I hope you will reply soon. I am looking forward to hearing from you.

Bye!

Best Wishes,
Sharon

Letter for Discussion

Block 21, #12-21

Queen Street 21
23rd February 2015

Dear Julie,

We have not met each other since we left primary school. How are you getting on in your

new school? I hope you are not swamped with homeworks and projects.

As for me, I have been posted to Excellence Secondary School. It has good facilities such as

computer room, an air-conditioned library and a beautiful garden. However, it is situated along a

busy road; hence, it is very noisy. Still, I like this condition because I have made a lot of friends

here and the teachers are kind and helpful.

47
FACULTY OF ISLAMIC BUSINESS
UNIVERSITAS POTENSI UTAMA December 30, 1899

Now let me tell you about my class. I am in Secondary 1B and there are thirty-five pupils

in my class. Only twelve of them are girls. Most of my classmates are happy-go-lucky extroverts

and we are quite noisy during lessons. However, during History periods, you can hear a pin drop

because the History teacher is our strict Prefect Mistress. I sit next to a boy who is a great joker.

He often sings funny songs and likes to mimick people. Despite his playfulness, he is very good

at Mathematics and often helps me with difficult problems. Although I get on well with my

classmates, I dislike a few of the girls who are very vain and often comb their hair in the class. I

hope they will grow out of this bad habit.

Well, I guess that is all for now. Do write back and tell me about your present school.

Bye

Fondly,
Raymond
