Variation across Contexts.

Students will be able to identify, analyze, and reflect on variation in

rhetorical and linguistic patterns, including their own, from a range of contexts (e.g cultural,
digital, workplace, and/or academic).
Possible assignments to reflect on:

 Major Assignment 1 (this depends what you wrote about in your essay)
 Major Assignment Draft 2 (or Major Assignment 2 if you want to talk about it now)
 Analysis of Rhetorical Situations in the Walmart Online Shopper According to
Melanie Gagich (group activity done in class)
 Reading Response 5
 Group Activity 4

After making your decision on which assignment you want to talk about per outcome,
answer all of question 1, and all or some of question 2:

1. What rhetorical and/or linguistic patterns have you observed within your chosen
assignment? In what context were the texts you focused on used? How did the
assignment ask you to do this?
2. What did you know about those concepts before this class? What did you learn while
doing the assignment? How did you apply these concepts in the assignment you
chose?

Answers:
1. Within the assignment I chose, there are multiple examples of rhetoric and linguistic patters
are being demonstrated. The context that were focused in the text I chose were text and images.
The assignment asked my group to find what each advertisement was demonstrating to their
audience. There multiple rhetoric and linguistic patterns showed up. An example I can give is the
way they demonstrate kids toys. The pattern shown is that all kids toys are demonstrated with
kids playing with those toys making them more attracted to that targeted audience and portray
who should be buying/having this gift.
2. What I already knew before coming to this class was that rhetoric is a way you use to convey
the audience of your point using logos ethos pathos. One thing I learned while doing this
assignment is how this is displayed in a different modes and how rhetoric is used in the real
world. I applied these concepts back to the assignment by telling my groupmates to take into
consideration how rhetoric is used in every advertisement to see what message they are trying to
convey to their targeted audience in order to complete the question on who is the targeted
audience.
