The 3 Bored Princesses

By- Ritika Amit Kumar

Once upon a time, there lived 3 young princesses. They

were all talented and smart. The eldest princess, Sa-
mantha, could play the harp and sing. The middle one,
Renita, was a painter. The youngest one, Alexandra,
loved crochet and
reading books.

One day, when

their parents were
away, a wicked
witch cast a spell
on their castle.

“ Hocus pocus.
may this spell be
cast with complete
focus. May each second feel like an hour. May you
feel like you are trapped in a world afar. May this spell
last until the bell rings. The damage would be done,
and clipped would be your wings.” The witch had cast
this spell as the king, had refused the eldest princess’s
hand in marriage to the witch’s son. She felt that the
only way to get back at these talented princesses was
through their mind. She planned to bore the princesses
to death.
The 3 princesses were now trapped in their own rooms,
and as time moved so slowly, they started getting very
bored. They could not seek each other for company as
each room felt as if it was very far from the other.

The eldest princess decided to sing, but was too bored

to do so. The second princess decided to paint, but
could not focus well enough. The third one, who was
much younger than the first two, was used to being ne-
glected. So, she picked up a book and promptly entered
fantasy land through the books. As 3 hours passed, and
the bells were sounded for the King’s and Queen’s entry,
the spell broke.

When the Queen and the King entered Samantha’s

room, they saw gloom. The room was dingy and stormy,
much like Samantha’s mood. The queen quickly rushed
to Renita’s room as the king summoned the doctor to
see Samantha. Renita was lost. her paints and brushes
were all over the place, and she kept repeating one paint
stroke on her canvas. By now, the queen was inconsol-
able. She was about to step toward’s alexandra’s room,
when she came running to her. Alexandra was surpris-
ingly happy and unaffected at all.

Soon, the King setup an enquiry. That’s when someone

told him that the wicked witch had been seen in the
vicinity. She was soon called. The witch was surprised
that the youngest princess hadn’t been impacted by the
spell at all. When she told the King that the spell was
already undone, but the impact of the spell could not be
undone, the King sent her to the dungeons.
Doctors were promptly called, to help the princesses get
back to health and happiness. While the doctors helped
the 2 princesses recover, they explained to the King that
the two princesses were impacted only because they
were used to attention. They had never gotten bored in
their entire life. The youngest one however, was used to
not having too many people run after her. This is why she
was happy even when time seemed to move slowly. She
had promptly opened a book and kept herself focussed.
This is why, the spell did not impact her.

The King then called all his people, and asked them to
ensure all the children in the kingdom were allowed one
hour of boredom each day. This helped the children keep
themselves engaged and happy.
As expected, no one in their kingdom, was unhappy any-
more.

Nikki Learns a Lesson
By Sujatha Jaishankar

Nikki was a little narwhal. The narwhal is a kind of

whale.

Found in Arctic waters, the narwhal has a very long tusk

that grows from its upper lip. The
tusk is actually a tooth! This long
tusk, gives the narwhal its name
unicorn of the sea! A pretty name!
Nikki was a friendly little narwhal!
He loved being in the pod with the
others! He and his friends learnt
narwhal stuff...like...using his tusk
to know the temperature of the
water....understanding what whis-
tles, clicks and squeaks meant...
sending out sound waves in the water and learning how
close another creature was from the returning sound
waves....catching codfish and squid.....learning to swim
belly-up... Oh, there was plenty for Nikki the little nar-
whal to learn!

I love swimming belly-up! squealed Nikki! This is so

much fun! He was learning to flip over and swim bel-
ly-up! Narwhals do that! He loved staying still as long
as he could...like a statue! One day, Nikki saw a school
of codfish! He loved codfish! He chased them and of
course, the codfish swam away as fast as they could!
Nikki chased after them! Further and further and further
away.....Nikki was swimming into waters that he had not
been in before!
By the time Nikki realized this, it was...too late. All
around him the water was quiet and still. The codfish
had disappeared. Nikki was alone. All alone.
The little narwhal was scared. He sent out sound waves
to connect to his pod, but no return waves came back.
Nikki was truly alone.
The little narwhal swam here and there trying all the
time to connect to his pod! Now he understood why the
older narwhals told the younger ones to ALWAYS swim
in pairs, never alone. The ocean was big and they could
get lost.
I wish I had listened to them! thought Nikki. What if I
never find my pod! That thought upset the little narwhal
a lot.
Just then, Nikki saw a polar bear swimming slowly to-
wards him!

Oh dear! Oh dear! This was not good at all!

If narwhals like to eat codfish, polar bears think nar-
whals are yummy! And Nikki would make a tasty snack
for a hungry polar bear!

What was Nikki to do? He thought desperately! The po-

lar bear was some distance away. He had not seen the
little narwhal...as yet.
Belly-up! Stay still! Perfectly still! thought Nikki! He
quickly flipped over belly-up and froze himself to remain
very still....as if he were dead...
The polar bear swam up to Nikki, sniffed him a bit and
then slowly swam away. He was not interested in a...
dead narwhal.
In the meantime, the pod was busy. They were out
swimming in pairs in different directions, sending out
sound waves, searching for Nikki! One pair picked up
a return sound wave! It was very faint. It seemed to be
coming from far away.

As the narwhals swam in the direction of that sound

wave, it became stronger and stronger! Nikki had recog-
nized the sound waves coming towards him and he was
swimming towards the narwhal pair as quickly as he
could!
Very soon he was back in his pod! He felt good. He
felt safe and happy. Most of all, he knew he would not
chase fish alone, but ALWAYS with another narwhal!
No more getting lost...EVER!
