FROM THE HEAD OF JUNIOR SCHOOL

Year 5/6 Concert
Last night we were treated to the final Music Concert for the year as our Year 5 and 6 boys
demonstrated their wonderful musical talents to a large audience in the Ian Roach Auditorium. I thought
it was one of the most enjoyable and fun concerts I have attended since joining Scotch. The standard of
musicianship was, as always, of a very high level and the soloists, Oliver New on piano and Brandon
Pai on the xylophone were stunning. Our choirs with their singing and dancing started the evening on a
high and the evening just continued to get better from there. The Percussion ensemble were amazing
and brought a great smile to the faces of the audience with their enthusiasm and precision and the String
Orchestra, complete with Ms Thom in her PJs, was another highlight. Capping the evening off were the
Junior School Big Band and Concert Band who were once again just fabulous.
I am very grateful to all of the music staff and to all of our Junior School teachers who worked with the
boys off stage for their efforts in ensuring this was a terrific culmination to the year. In particular I thank
Ms Thom and Ms Piggin for all the work they have done in ensuring the evening went so well and was of
such high quality.
Speech Night
One of our most important events is looming large on our calendars. On Thursday 8 December at
7.30pm we will once again celebrate our annual Junior School Speech Night in Memorial Hall. Speech
Night is a wonderful occasion where we celebrate the year we have had, congratulate our departing
Year 6 boys and award a number of prizes to boys who have performed particularly well during the year.
The evening is also the Graduation Ceremony for our Year 6 boys as each boy receives his Graduation
Certificate from the Chairman of School Council and the Principal. Speeches are made by our School
Captain, the Principal, the Chairman and myself, along with some beautiful singing by the boys.
It is a very important event and it is an expectation that boys from Years 3 to 6 will attend. I look forward
to seeing many of our families on the night supporting the boys and congratulating our Year 6 graduates
on their years in the Junior School.
Parent Satisfaction Survey
Each year we conduct a number of surveys with parents, staff and boys to check on how our various
constituents feel about their school. These surveys are conducted towards the end of the year and they
provide us with valuable information in relation to how we are performing in the eyes of those connected
with the school. Here is the link to this year’s Parent Satisfaction Survey
https://www.quia.com/sv/762675.html
It is an online survey which should only take about 10 minutes to complete. The survey is anonymous
and is mostly multiple choice. There is an opportunity for free comment at the end of the survey. I
encourage all families to assist us in being the best school we can be by completing this survey and
providing us with feedback on how we are doing.
This year’s survey also includes three new questions that relate to the school’s actions in working on our
Safeguarding Children processes. We would value your thoughts on this particular aspect of our
operations as well. Thank you for your support for this survey.

It is always exciting at the end of the year to hear so many polished solo and ensemble performances. In
the Years 5 and 6 Assembly on Tuesday, we were privileged to hear Oliver New (6C) perform the
stunning piano solo, Rachmaninoff’s Elegie, in E-flat minor. Oliver also played this solo in the Junior
School Concert on Thursday evening in the Ian Roach Hall. The other soloist on Thursday evening was
percussionist Brandon Pai (6C) who performed Maple Leaf Rag by Scott Joplin, accompanied by
Ms Julia PIggin. The concert featured all the main Year 5 and 6 ensembles: Concert Band, conducted by
Ms Jude Hallum, the String Orchestra, conducted by Mr Adam Merange, Big Band, conducted by
Ms Louisa Trewartha and the Junior School Choirs presenting songs from the Torres Strait Islands.
Congratulations to all boys, Junior School and Music staff involved.

Please note that Concert Band, String Orchestra and Big Band before school rehearsals have now
ceased for the year. This means everyone can sleep in on Thursday and Friday mornings!

On Wednesday, the Years 3 and 4 Brass Ensemble performed to their peers, conducted by Mr Chris
Farrands (Head of Brass), and assisted by Ms Louisa Trewartha. The boys performed really nicely with
good tone, playing arrangements of Beethoven’s Ode to Joy and We Will Rock You. There are no more
rehearsals this year for this group.

The Percussion Concert will be held on Wednesday 30 November at 7.30pm in the Ian Roach Hall. This
features Years 5-12 percussionists, and is coordinated by Ms Jude Hallum, phone 9810 4375.

The final Piano Club will be held on Monday 28 November from 1.00pm – 1.30pm. This is held in the
Keith Humble Auditorium, but please meet the Teacher-in-Charge. Ms Isabel Cameron in Rm 2.33
beforehand.

All Junior School boys will be rehearsing their singing next week for the Christmas Concert and Speech
Night in the final week of the term.

Many boys have been sitting for AMEB and Trinity music exams, and as soon as all of the results have
been collated, we will publish them in the newsletter.

PE AND SPORT

Physical Education

Well done to all Year 3-6 boys this past Tuesday as they worked hard for their House team in the House
T-Ball competition. Conditions were a little damp and the boys competed with good spirit.

With only a couple of weeks remaining in PE, Year 4-6 boys will be preparing for summer sports, in
particular tennis and cricket. Boys in these year levels may bring their own tennis racket and/or cricket
gear if they wish. The school will provide all equipment for the sports. The Year 1-2 boys will practice
some of the cricket skills in the nets for the first time in the remaining days.

Please remind your son to bring a water bottle to class.

Please take a look in lost property if your son is missing any clothing items. It is quite full at present!

A reminder please that a note from home is needed if a boy is injured, ill or unable to participate
in daily PE or sport.

A MESSAGE FROM THE SOCIAL SERVICES TEAM

It is the time of the year when we support Anglicare’s Annual Giving Tree Appeal. It has become a
tradition for Junior School boys to bring along non-perishable food and/or new (unwrapped) presents for
children less fortunate than themselves. All presents and food will be donated to Anglicare Victoria. Your
donations will support disadvantaged families and foster children, so they too may enjoy the sharing of
presents and a family Christmas.

The Giving Tree is in the Junior School Assembly Hall until Tuesday 6 December. Boys are asked to
leave their Christmas gifts under the tree. These Christmas gifts will be collected and matched
appropriately to children of various ages.

All donations need to be at school by 8.25am on Tuesday 6 December. On this day a representative
from Anglicare will collect the gifts. If you have any large boxes, it would be appreciated if you would
send them to school so we can store any gifts and food in them.

We look forward, once again, to your generous support.
