Unit 6 Journal Assignment

1. List two of the myths that you found most intriguing and write the reasons why you
find them interesting. Outline the myth using your own words and explain the
scientific fact about the issue.

The most interesting two climate myths I found in the given article are Humans are too
insignificant to affect global climate and Greenland was green. Greenland was green this
due to the name Greenland means that the land is green and this is to interesting because of
Greenland in real world is not green at all. The other interesting climate myth is Humans
are too insignificant to affect global climate it is a clear myth since human beings are the
main and significant to affect the global climate.

Scientific fact about Greenland was green: Greenland is a large area situated east of Canada,
between the Arctic and Atlantic oceans. About 80% of the island is covered by the
Greenland ice sheet. During the 980s, Scandinavian and Icelandic exporers established two
or three settlements on the south-west coast of Greenland(Skeptical Science, n.d).

Scientific fact about Humans are too insignificant to affect global climate: Since the
industrial revolution, with ever-increasing supplies of fossil fuels, the activities of a
dramatically expanding world population have made significant alterations to the make-up
of our atmosphere. In some cases, human-caused change is direct and unambiguous. The
harmful effect of the human release of CFCs on the ozone layer is well documented and not
disputed. Down on the ground, draining of marshland and deforestation can produce a
significant decrease in water vapor in the atmosphere downwind; while the introduction of
irrigation for agriculture has the opposite effect. Over time, both of these human activities
can alter patterns of rainfall, turning deserts into green areas and green areas into
deserts(Skeptical Science, n.d).

2. Which substances cause ozone depletion? Please explain and discuss their effect on
climate change. Use sources/citations to support your work.
A well known chemical that erode the layer of ozone is ozone-depleting substances , which
protects the earth from dangerous radiation; those dangerous ultraviolet radiation directs
from the sun is decreased by ozone layer. Some of the substances that reduces ozone layer
includes: halons, methyl bromide, chlorofluorocarbons, carbon tetrachloride,
Hydrochlorofluorocarbons, hydrobromoflourocarbons etc. the effect of these substances
are visible in our day to day lives in different forms like skin cancer, decreasing of immune
system, cataracts and the effect is for both human and animals including all living things.

3. Compare the environmental impacts of waste in rural and urban settings. Use
sources/citations to support your arguments.

Environmental pollution in urban and rural area takes different shapes and effects.
When we come to urban area pollution effect it mainly showed up in terms of
disease due to the pollution, those pollutions are come from industrializations,
vehicle and waste result of manufacturing industries. Whereas the environmental
pollution in rural areas is explained by famine and poor infrastructure qualities.
Source of pollution in rural areas are sourced from floods, lack of enough rain for
cultivation etc.
