and La Nina
 Distinguishand differentiate among and
between different hydro meteorological
hazards; DRR11/12-IIc-d-32
 Typhoon
 At the end of the lesson, the students will:
 1. Determine what is a typhoon and its
corresponding characteristics.
Is a large, powerful and violent
tropical cyclone. It is a low pressure
area rotating counterclockwise and
containing rising warm air that forms
over warm water in Western Pacific
Ocean.
 Intense low pressure system which
characterized by strong spiral winds
towards the center, called the “Eye”. It is
usually located in the Indian Ocean.

 Typhoon is called a Cyclone in the South

Pacific and Indian Ocean and Hurricane in
the Atlantic Ocean.
 Tropical Depression – maximum
winds from 35 kph to 63 kph;
 Tropical Storm- maximum winds
from 64 kph to 118 kph;
 Typhoon-maximum winds exceeding
118kph;
 Typhoons are made over the ocean; typhoons are not made over
land.
 To make a Typhoon you need a lot of warm, moist air
evaporating off the ocean surface and rising rapidly, creating the
area of relatively low pressure - a weather system. The rapid
rising of the air mass and the subsequent condensation of the
moisture at altitude, combined with the rotation of the Earth, are
the necessary energy components to facilitate rotation of the
weather system; a Tropical Depression (TD) is formed. When the
upper atmospheric conditions are conducive then the rotation is
accelerated and the weather feature forms into a Tropical Storm
(TS). Assuming the Tropical Storm remains over an area of warm
ocean - with a sea surface temperature above 26 degrees Celsius -
then the weather system will most likely continue to increase in
rotation speed until it reaches the status of a typhoon
 Approximately twenty tropical
cyclones enter the Philippine Area
of Responsibility yearly of which ten
will be typhoons with five being
destructive.The Philippines is "the
most exposed country in the world
to tropical storms" according to a
Time Magazine article in 2013
Typhoons can hit the Philippines
any time of year, with the
months of June to September
being the most active, with
August being the most active
individual month and May the
least active.
Storms most frequently make
landfall on the islands of:
 Eastern Visayas,
Bicol region,
Southern and northern Luzon
Mindanao
