Presentation of topic
Hydrometeorological hazard- A process or phenomenon of atmospheric, hydrological or
oceanographic nature that may cause loss of life, injury or other health impacts,
property damage, loss of livelihoods and services, social and economic disruption, or
environmental damage.
Hydrometeorological Phenomena and Hazards-Includes tropical cyclones,
thunderstorms, hailstorms, tornados, blizzards, heavy snowfall, avalanches, coastal
storm surges, floods including flash floods, drought, heatwaves and cold spells.
Discussion
Tropical cyclone- is a rapidly rotating storm system characterized by a low-pressure
center, a closed low-level atmospheric circulation, strong winds, and a spiral
arrangement of thunderstorms that produce heavy rain. Depending on its location and
strength, a tropical cyclone is referred to by different names, including hurricane,
typhoon, tropical storm, cyclonic storm, tropical depression, and simply cyclone.
A hurricane is a tropical cyclone that occurs in the Atlantic Ocean and
northeastern Pacific Ocean, and a typhoon occurs in the northwestern Pacific Ocean; in
the south Pacific or Indian Ocean, comparable storms are referred to simply as "tropical
cyclones" or "severe cyclonic storms".
A tornado- is a rapidly rotating column of air that is in contact with both the surface of
the Earth and a cumulonimbus cloud or, in rare cases, the base of a cumulus cloud.
Tornadoes come in many shapes and sizes, and they are often visible in the form of
a condensation funnel originating from the base of a cumulonimbus cloud, with a cloud
of rotating debris and dust beneath it.
Avalanche- (also called a snow slide) is an event that occurs when a cohesive slab
of snow lying upon a weaker layer of snow fractures and slides down a steep slope.
Flood- is an overflow of water that submerges land that is usually dry. In the sense of
"flowing water", the word may also be applied to the inflow of the tide. Floods are an
area of study of the discipline hydrology and are of significant concern
in agriculture, civil engineering and public health.
Flooding may occur as an overflow of water from water bodies, such as a river, lake, or
ocean, in which the water overtops or breaks levees, resulting in some of that water
escaping its usual boundaries, or it may occur due to an accumulation of rainwater on
saturated ground in an areal flood.
Application
-We could use this topic to inform everyone about the given phenomenon and hazards.
In that way, they will know how to prepare their selves when it strikes in reality. It will
also give them knowledge about how it will affect the certain place when it strikes.
