 Presentation of topic
 Hydrometeorological hazard- A process or phenomenon of atmospheric, hydrological or
oceanographic nature that may cause loss of life, injury or other health impacts,
property damage, loss of livelihoods and services, social and economic disruption, or
environmental damage.
 Hydrometeorological Phenomena and Hazards-Includes tropical cyclones,
thunderstorms, hailstorms, tornados, blizzards, heavy snowfall, avalanches, coastal
storm surges, floods including flash floods, drought, heatwaves and cold spells.

 Discussion
 Tropical cyclone- is a rapidly rotating storm system characterized by a low-pressure
center, a closed low-level atmospheric circulation, strong winds, and a spiral
arrangement of thunderstorms that produce heavy rain. Depending on its location and
strength, a tropical cyclone is referred to by different names, including hurricane,
typhoon, tropical storm, cyclonic storm, tropical depression, and simply cyclone.
A hurricane is a tropical cyclone that occurs in the Atlantic Ocean and
northeastern Pacific Ocean, and a typhoon occurs in the northwestern Pacific Ocean; in
the south Pacific or Indian Ocean, comparable storms are referred to simply as "tropical
cyclones" or "severe cyclonic storms".

 Thunderstorm- also known as an electrical storm or a lightning storm, is

a storm characterized by the presence of lightning and its acoustic effect on the Earth's
atmosphere, known as thunder. Relatively weak thunderstorms are sometimes
called thundershowers.
 Thunderstorms occur in a type of cloud known as a cumulonimbus. Some of the most
persistent severe thunderstorms, known as supercells, rotate as do cyclones. While
most thunderstorms move with the mean wind flow through the layer of
the troposphere that they occupy, vertical wind shear sometimes causes a deviation in
their course at a right angle to the wind shear direction.

 Heavy snowfall- A storm of heavy hail. Hail is a form of solid precipitation. It is distinct

from ice pellets, though the two are often confused. It consists of balls or irregular
lumps of ice, each of which is called a hailstone. Ice pellets fall generally in cold weather
while hail growth is greatly inhibited during cold surface temperatures.

 A tornado- is a rapidly rotating column of air that is in contact with both the surface of
the Earth and a cumulonimbus cloud or, in rare cases, the base of a cumulus cloud.

 Tornadoes come in many shapes and sizes, and they are often visible in the form of
a condensation funnel originating from the base of a cumulonimbus cloud, with a cloud
of rotating debris and dust beneath it.

 Blizzard-is a severe snowstorm characterized by strong sustained winds of at least 56

km/h and lasting for a prolonged period of time typically three hours or more. A ground
blizzard is a weather condition where snow is not falling but loose snow on the ground is
lifted and blown by strong winds.

 Heavy snow- warning was a weather warning issued by the National Weather Service of

the United States during times when a high rate of snowfall was occurring or was
forecast. Generally, the warning was issued for snowfall rates of 6 inches (15 cm) or
more in 12 hours, or 8 inches (20 cm) or more in 24 hours.

 Avalanche- (also called a snow slide) is an event that occurs when a cohesive slab
of snow lying upon a weaker layer of snow fractures and slides down a steep slope.

 Storm surge- is a rise in sea level that occurs during tropical cyclones, intense storms

also known as typhoons or hurricanes. The storms produce strong winds that push the
water into shore, which can lead to flooding. This makes storm surges very dangerous
for coastal regions.

 Flood- is an overflow of water that submerges land that is usually dry. In the sense of
"flowing water", the word may also be applied to the inflow of the tide. Floods are an
area of study of the discipline hydrology and are of significant concern
in agriculture, civil engineering and public health.
 Flooding may occur as an overflow of water from water bodies, such as a river, lake, or
ocean, in which the water overtops or breaks levees, resulting in some of that water
escaping its usual boundaries, or it may occur due to an accumulation of rainwater on
saturated ground in an areal flood.

 Drought- or drouth is an event of prolonged shortages in the water supply, whether

atmospheric, surface water or ground water. A drought can last for months or years, or
may be declared after as few as 15 days.
 "Drought is caused by not only lack of precipitation and high temperatures but by
overuse and overpopulation," said David Miskus, a drought expert and meteorologist at
the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's (NOAA) Climate Prediction
Center.

 Heat wave- or heatwave, is a period of excessively hot weather, which may be

accompanied by high humidity, especially in oceanic climate countries. While definitions
vary, a heat wave is usually measured relative to the usual weather in the area and
relative to normal temperatures for the season.
 Cold wave- (known in some regions as a cold snap or cold spell) is a weather
phenomenon that is distinguished by a cooling of the air. Specifically, as used by the
U.S. National Weather Service, a cold wave is a rapid fall in temperature within a 24-
hour period requiring substantially increased protection to agriculture, industry,
commerce, and social activities.

 Application

-We could use this topic to inform everyone about the given phenomenon and hazards.
In that way, they will know how to prepare their selves when it strikes in reality. It will
also give them knowledge about how it will affect the certain place when it strikes.
