Anywhere in our surroundings, we can find various potential pollutants that pose

complex dangers to our environment. Due to the fact that some humans practice improper

waste disposal, pollutions are still inevitable. However, it can be controlled and minimized by

following management protocols and proper environmental practices. Particularly in our

houses, we can as well find major potential pollutants that are hazardous for our health and our

environment. These can be materials that contain chemical substances, appliances that use fuel

to operate which also have inadequate maintenance, and other contaminants that originated

from various household products. Gas-fueled ranges, gas-fueled furnaces, portable kerosene

heaters, wooden stoves, and any fuel-burning appliance that has no proper maintenance are

one of the major pollutants because they create Carbon Monoxide that heavily pollutes the air.

According to the American Lung Association (ALA), higher levels of Carbon Monoxide can cause

flulike and poisoning symptoms such as headache, nausea, dizziness, vomiting, and intoxication.

Volatile Organic Compounds that include paints, varnishes, waxes, aerosol products, as well as

cleaning, disinfecting, cosmetic and degreasing products are also major pollutants for the

indoor air. These materials contain chemicals such as toluene, trichloroethylene, and xylenes

that adversely affect the humidity in the air and also carry harmful effects to our respiratory

system if there’s no proper ventilation in using these products. Without following the 3R’s in

our household, our unsegregated tons of garbage such as plastics, papers, cloth, and other

wastes can cause land pollution. Organic and non-organic fertilizers often introduce a broad mix

of heavy metals such as copper and cadmium that are highly toxic metals found in mineral

phosphorus fertilizers, and organic pollutants if not regulated properly. These factors can

utterly contaminate soil if used constantly. All of these materials are mostly found in our house
but they serve essential to use in various ways. However, we are constantly following proper

management in cleaning our household environment to guarantee the safety of health.

Nevertheless, our family is well-organized in taking care of these materials and we are always

cautious in utilizing them to avoid or minimize the occurrence of potential pollutants that can

harm our health and environment.
