Chapter 3 Sum it up!

A differentiated, responsive classroom is one in which the
teacher believes that intelligence is not fixed. Mary Cay Ricci
explains how a front-end differentiated, responsive model of
instruction will help all students grow and learn.

Chapter Highlights

Differentiation Instructional Practices:


 Preview and Preassess: finding out what students know
 Students should be allowed to preview the content before taking a preassessment.
 A good preassessment will allow for front-end differentiation,
 The preassessment must measure understanding in the specific area being assessed,
application of the skill, topic or concept, use different formats, and have effective
questions. Assessment should be read aloud if reading is not being assessed.

 Curriculum Compacting: eliminating content that students have previously learned

 Flexible Grouping: essential in all content areas to promote a growth mindset, one challenge to
flexible grouping in managing the groups in a classroom

 Acceleration and Enrichment: both are equally important

 Formative Assessment: checking for understanding, a must in a responsive,


growth mindset classroom

 Summative Assessment: finding out what a student has learned at the end
of a unit of study
