Document: IF08CZ29

5.3 Broadcast IP Address Selection and Suggestions

When TIC MVD Trace Tool attempts to connect to a drive, it broadcasts to the IP address
specified in the Broadcast IP Address Box near the top right of the Main Window. In order
for TIC MVD Trace Tool to successfully communicate with and connect to an attached drive,
it must broadcast to the drive’s IPv4 address or to address 255.255.255.255, which broadcasts
to all local nodes (including any attached drive). Additionally, there are some PC network
connection settings which affect TIC MVD Trace Tool’s ability to communicate with the drive
and these considerations are described below:

The first network connection setting to consider is whether or not the PC is connected to any
other networks besides the one associated with the drive. If the PC is connected to other
networks, then it can still communicate with the drive, but the communication must be
conducted using the drive’s specific IP address (ex: 192.168.87.87) and not the general local
network IP address (255.255.255.255). If the user desires to disconnect from other networks
(note that this is not required for communication), this can be done by using the following steps
as illustrated for Windows 7 in Figure 4:

1. Click on the Windows Start button and enter Control Panel in the search bar.
2. In the Control Panel, select the Network and Internet option.
3. Select the Network and Sharing Center option.
4. Select the Change Adapter Settings option.
5. Right click on and select Disable for all other networks besides the one associated with
the drive.

Figure 4. Disabling of Non-Drive-Related Networks

TIC MVD Trace Tool March 2020

IF08CZ29
Page 9
Document: IF08CZ29

The second important network connection setting is whether the IPv4 address of the PC’s
network connection associated with the drive is automatically set or manually assigned. If the
IPv4 address of the network associated with the drive connection is automatically set, then the
only way to communicate with the drive is by disconnecting from all other networks (as
previously described) and broadcasting to the local network IPv4 address 255.255.255.255.
For this reason, it is recommended that users manually assign the IPv4 address for the network
associated with the drive connection in order to allow communication using the drive’s specific
IPv4 address (ex: 192.168.87.87). This can be done by using the following steps as illustrated
for Windows 7 in Figure 5:

1. Click on the Windows Start button and enter Control Panel in the search bar.
2. In the Control Panel, select the Network and Internet option.
3. Select the Network and Sharing Center option.
4. Select the Change Adapter Settings option.
5. Right click on the network associated with the drive and select Properties.
6. Select Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) and click on the Properties button.
7. Select Use the following IP address and manually enter the desired IPv4 address and
Subnet mask settings, such as the ones shown in Figure 5.

The data setting area includes signal selection and settings, graph settings, and selected signal
data displaying area. Graph Area displays associated signal waveform.

8.3.1 Signal Selection and Settings

Symbols in the symbol settings panel come with 4 signals as default setting in each page.
Page number can be changed via clicking Page Back or Page Forward button. The default
signals can be edited or removed from the symbol settings panel. Up to 8 symbols can be
added in a single page via the signal selection dropdown list. In order to change the graph
number associated with a symbol, select the desired graph number from the dropdown list in
the appropriate Graph # column cell. The line color and line thickness used for symbols in
the graphs are indicated by the Color and Thickness column cells. The line color may be
changed by clicking in the Color cell. In order to change a symbol’s line thickness, select
the desired line thickness from the dropdown list in the appropriate Thickness column cell.

8.3.2 Graph Settings

The traceview graphs vertical axis (y-axis) range boundaries are specified in the graph
settings panel. By default, each graph has a minimum y-axis boundary of -100 and a
maximum y-axis boundary of +100. These boundaries can be changed by clicking in the
appropriate cell and entering the desired new boundary value. Alternatively, graphs can be
auto-scaled based on the sample data associated with them. Individual graphs can be auto-
scaled by clicking in the appropriate cell of the far right column in the graph settings panel.
All graphs can be simultaneously auto-scaled by clicking on the Auto-Scale.
