1. General Information
1.1 Introduction
Thank you for purchasing a Toshiba Medium Voltage Drive. This document describes the
screens and functions of TIC MVD Trace Tool, which is a powerful software maintenance tool
for Toshiba Medium Voltage Drives.
TIC MVD Trace Tool can be used to save and view drive setting files and traceback files for
Toshiba medium voltage drives. Viewing of the traceback file is via TraceView. The Trace
Tool can also be used to view online drive properties, status, and reset fault records and event
counters, but cannot be used for changing or adjusting of any drive parameters or variables.
For this functionality, TIC MVD TOOL is required
This software user guide, the drive manuals, and all associated equipment manuals and
drawings should be read before connecting to a drive.
1.3 Installation
To install TIC MVD Trace Tool:
Close all other programs
Run the setup.exe file
Follow the on-screen TIC MVD Trace Tool Setup Wizard Instructions
It may be necessary to reboot the computer during the installation (the TIC MVD Trace
Tool Setup Wizard will provide on-screen instructions if this is necessary)
2. PC to Drive Connection
Connect the PC to the drive equipment using an Ethernet cross cable. On the drive equipment
side, connect the Ethernet cable to the electronic operator interface (EOI) Tool port, as
indicated in Figure 1. On the PC side, connect the Ethernet cable to the Ethernet port.
Alternatively, an Ethernet to USB adapter can be used to connect the Ethernet cable to one of
the PC’s USB ports instead of an Ethernet port.

4. Main Window
4.1 Overview
Once the user clicks on the TIC MVD Trace Tool icon, TIC MVD Trace Tool proceeds to the
Main Window shown in Figure 3. The Main Window consists of five main areas summarized
below.
1. Title
2. Menu Bar
3. Command Buttons
4. IP and Database Boxes
5. Status Buttons and Labels
4.2 Title
The title shows the software title and version number. It also indicates that Toshiba
International Corporation owns the copyrights to TIC MVD Trace Tool.
5. Software-Drive Connection
5.1 Automatic Initial Connection Attempt
After the user clicks on the TIC MVD Trace Tool icon, TIC MVD Trace Tool proceeds to the
Main Window and automatically attempts to connect with any attached drive by broadcasting
to the IPv4 addresses 192.168.87.87 (the default drive IP address) and 255.255.255.255 (the
broadcast address to all nodes on the local network).
The first network connection setting to consider is whether or not the PC is connected to any
other networks besides the one associated with the drive. If the PC is connected to other
networks, then it can still communicate with the drive, but the communication must be
conducted using the drive’s specific IP address (ex: 192.168.87.87) and not the general local
network IP address (255.255.255.255). If the user desires to disconnect from other networks
(note that this is not required for communication), this can be done by using the following steps
as illustrated for Windows 7 in Figure 4:
1. Click on the Windows Start button and enter Control Panel in the search bar.
2. In the Control Panel, select the Network and Internet option.
3. Select the Network and Sharing Center option.
4. Select the Change Adapter Settings option.
5. Right click on and select Disable for all other networks besides the one associated with
the drive.
The second important network connection setting is whether the IPv4 address of the PC’s
network connection associated with the drive is automatically set or manually assigned. If the
IPv4 address of the network associated with the drive connection is automatically set, then the
only way to communicate with the drive is by disconnecting from all other networks (as
previously described) and broadcasting to the local network IPv4 address 255.255.255.255.
For this reason, it is recommended that users manually assign the IPv4 address for the network
associated with the drive connection in order to allow communication using the drive’s specific
IPv4 address (ex: 192.168.87.87). This can be done by using the following steps as illustrated
for Windows 7 in Figure 5:
1. Click on the Windows Start button and enter Control Panel in the search bar.
2. In the Control Panel, select the Network and Internet option.
3. Select the Network and Sharing Center option.
4. Select the Change Adapter Settings option.
5. Right click on the network associated with the drive and select Properties.
6. Select Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) and click on the Properties button.
7. Select Use the following IP address and manually enter the desired IPv4 address and
Subnet mask settings, such as the ones shown in Figure 5.

Open the Traceback Window by clicking on the Traceback Command Button in the Main
Window, as indicated in Figure 13(a), or by selecting the Traceback entry in the Main
Window Drive Tools menu, as illustrated in Figure 13(b). The Traceback Window reads and
saves operational data (motor speed, motor current, etc.), when there is a drive equipment fault.
It also saves the setpoint file.

7.2 Settings
The Traceback window saves all populated fault banks and setpoint file. Traceback data is
saved for all fault banks containing fault information and traceback data. The drive fault bank
dropdown list displayed in Figure 14, contain one entry for each of the connected drive’s fault
banks. These fault bank descriptions are updated when the Traceback Window is first opened,
but they are not continuously updated while the window is open. They can be refreshed by
clicking on the Refresh Data button at the top of the window.
8. TraceView Window
8.1 Overview
Open a TraceView Window by clicking on the TraceView Command Button in the Main
Window, as indicated in Figure 16(a), or by selecting the TraceView entry in the Main
Window Drive Tools menu, as illustrated in Figure 16(b).
