MATERIAL OF ENGLISH ACROSS CURRICULUM IN SUMMARY

English Across Curriculum is the various forms of pictorial expression are always
accompanied by language and often require language to make intelligible (Carroll, 1974). In
other word, English Across Curriculum (EAC) is conveying the materials in other subject
contents e.g. Art, Math, Chemist, etc.
Learning EAC has some purposes, those are: to be exposed to a foreign language
(English), to use English for genuine communication, to use English for practical purposes, to
integrate all language skill, and to gain confidence in using English. We are in English
department are directed to be a professional teacher. There are three indicators as the
standards for developing professional teachers.
First is Context Standard. It covers learning communities, leadership, and resources.
Learning communities is the team that meets on regular basis, for the purposes of learning,
joint lesson plan, and problem solving. They can be bilingual teachers or teachers with
bilingual educators and they are learning to infuse their subject with an awareness of issues
related to the English language students/learners. Leadership isn’t always mean to lead, but is
about the need of teachers about active participation from the educational staffs and principal
that have awareness and responsibility for what they are doing as the model of students.
Resources includes human capital (skill and knowledge), fiscal resources (time management),
and physical capital (the infrastructures and mediums needed to conduct classroom materials).
Second is Process Standard. This carries Data Driven (all data about students which
is important to assess the data), Evaluation (assessment through process of learning and
teaching process), Research Based (the way of teachers to identify the learners. It is effective
tool that provides direction and encourages for professional learning communities to set
effective agendas), Design (learning strategies appropriate to the intended goals), Learning
(the mode of content delivery must be adjusted to the learning strategies of content area
teachers), and Collaboration (joint learning to be more adept).
Third is Content Standard. It includes Equity (professional teachers should have the
skill to make the classroom become conducive), Quality Teaching (teachers have pedagogical
content knowledge addressed to the students), and Family Involvement (to get benefit in the
educational process, teachers should know how to involve their students’ families and wider
community in education).

REGULATION OF NATIONAL EDUCATION MINISTER

Regulation number 78, year 2009 is about the National Education Minister Regulation
to establish International Based School for Basic and Secondary Education Level in order to
discover the new possibilities relevant to the learners’ characteristic.

Regulation number 41, year 2007 the National Education Standard determines
National Education Minister Regulation about Process Standard for Basic and Secondary
Education Unit in order to perform Section 24 Governmental Regulation Number 19 Year
2005 decision.

Regulation number 22, year 2006 in order to perform the decision of Section 8 verse
(3), Section 10 verse (3), Section 11 verse (4), Section 12 verse (2), and Section 18 verse (3)
Governmental Regulation Number 19 Year 2005 about National Education Standard, needs to
establish National Education Minister Regulation about the Content Standard for Basic and
Secondary Education Unit.

GOVERNMENTAL REGULATION

Number 17, year 2010 is about the basic requirement of National Education and Rule
of International Based School, such as: The education management is the management of
authority in organizing national education system by government, province government, city
government, the educator held by the society and the education unit in order to run the
process of education conducive in line with the national education purpose, The education
management is the activity of organizing education system component in the unit or education
program in the line, level, and type of the education to run the process of education conducive
in line with the national education purpose, International Based Education is the education
unit which has fulfilled the National Education Standard and is enriched with the standard of
developed country.

CONCLUSSION

The point of view I get from matching between EAC material and these regulations
are there are some similarities between them. First, in Regulation of National Education
Minister number 78 years 2009, it describes in detail about International Based School. It is
same with the concept of the EAC lecture; to convey English material in other subject such as
art, math, chemist, etc. In number 41 years 2007, the similarity can be found in the field of
process standard. In EAC, process standard as the standard of developing professional teacher
is also available to run the learning process well. While in number 22 years 2006, has
similarity in Content standard where the teachers are encouraged to impulse the students reach
the minimum requirement competency according to their level and type of education. It is as
like the EAC content standard for the teachers to have equity skill. Meanwhile, in
Governmental Regulation number 17 years 2010 the relevance with EAC can be found in the
sector of International Based School. As also being talked in the Regulation of National
Education Minister number 78 years 2009, the teachers must have competency to use English
for practical purposes, integrate in all language skills, and of course gain the confidence to use
English as well.
