Abstract.
Equipment to be used while carrying out material handling processes is a significant aspect of
production in One on One Global Logistics. Material handling is a feature of all companies
although for many years they are unexplored areas. Any significant contribution made by the
material handling manager in reducing material cost will go a long way in reducing the cost of
production and improving profitability of the company and the rate of return.
This research study has added new knowledge to the staff on how to effectively use the material
handling equipment. The study targeted 50 storekeepers and 20 supervisors, a sample size of 50
respondents was used. The data was collected using both primary and secondary methods and the
collected data was analyzed using simple statistical methods such as percentage and
frequencies.it was then presented through tables and column charts for easy understanding and
interpretation.
The highly competitive environment linked to the globalization phenomena demands from
company's more agility, better performance and the constant search for cost reduction.
Improved material handling equipment is intrinsically associated with levels which later
implicates the production flow.

CHAPTER ONE
1.0 INTRODUCTION
1.1 BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY.
The case study related to this work is to be performed in one on One Logistics Company in
Nairobi, Kenya.
It was founded more than five decades ago and is classified as a large-sized company since it has
most number of employees. This region contains a cluster of industries of metal metallurgical
and metal mechanic sectors that its majority belong to the production chain which demands a
high internal performance level from their partners.
One on one Logistics Company will venture in improving the material handling equipment in the
manufacturing process to avoid future risks and uncertainties like delays or breakdown of the
equipment such as forklifts.
S.R P MACHURI (2012) has it that material handling equipment will make production flow
possible as it will give dynamism to static elements such as materials, products, equipments,
layout and human resource. Material handling equipment will enhance production function
mechanism and the concepts will be directly related to a production analysis focus.
CAS MC RONALD ( cat el 2013) stated that material handling equipment and devices must be
examined and will be classified into categories such as transporters which include the:
Conveyor belts
Chains
Rollers
The second class as stipulated by the above named scholar will include:
Cranes
Hoists
Lifts
The third class will have the industrial vehicles like:
1
Carts
Tractors
Pallet transporters
Forklifts
The fourth category will include the positioning equipment and lastly the stents and support
structures such as reels and holders. `
A key factor in improving material handling equipment is that it helps in selection and
configuration of equipment for material transportation.
TRISTAN TROY ET AL (2000) stipulated that equipment should be selected based on some
preliminary considerations taking into account the utilization of factory floor and its loading
capacity, examining the dimensions of the doors and corridors paying close attention to ceiling
their heights, identifying the environmental conditions and traction equipment in storage of food
products, eliminating the possibilities of incurring criminal and civil liabilities. The right choice
of equipment and equipment and location of work in progress is fundamental for the
optimization of a manufacturing company capacity.
The main objective of this study will be to evaluate internal customers satisfaction levels after
the change. Assessing the relationship between the improved material handling equipment and
the performance of transport and logistics in One on One Logistics Company.
It is observed that the handling of materials is broader compared to simple material movement.
This brings a higher operational level and even possible differential when compared with other
competitors.
The analysis of the operations comes later because it focuses with the production subjects that is
the operators and the machines. When making this distinction, it is possible to perceive the
relevance of material handling equipment. Beyond the basic function of storage and information
2
transfer which will occur simultaneously and will have both strategic and operational
dimensions.
The companies which will rely on information systems using the improved equipment namely
Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) to gain in precision and reliability and such will arouse
important proportion of manufacturing expenses leading to criticality in production operations.
The case study has it that when using forklifts and it leaves its workplace to transport a container
between pavilions, delays in machines setups are generated causing unnecessary costs and stress
on the forklift operator.
1.3OBJECTIVES.
These are the set goals that the company would like to achieve within a stipulated period of time.
Another set objective of the case study will be to evaluate, in a systematic way, the impact of
implemented changes made on the material handling equipment.
2. What are the impacts of storage of the material handling equipment on store efficiency?
6. What are the challenges faced when using the material handling equipment?
7. How does improving the material handling equipment affect the handling process?
3
1.5 CONCEPTIONAL FRAMEWORK.
The figure below shows that figuring out the contributing factors increases the profitability of
companies. The appropriate strategies can be developed to control and manage the problem after
finding out the contributing factors.

The manufacturing sector will be responsible for almost all of the supply of assembly lines,
including the components that go through the pre-assembly process before proceeding to the
final product assembly.
The whole process will run with an aid of forklifts. The setup time will be equal to or higher than
the time needed for parts manufacturing this situation coupled with the cost of downtime, will
demonstrate the importance of the tooling exchange process.
This case study will take up to a period of 2 years before it is put in action. It will be done to
demonstrate and establish the indicators of performance of logistics, increase in market share and
automated performance in handling of materials in one one one global logistics company.
Improving the equipments will further enhance and support the study of fundamentals and
general principles of information systems. Efficient material handling equipments helps in
reducing the manufacturing system operation costs by 15 to 30%. The main logistic
responsibility in manufacturing is to formulate a master program for the timely provisions of
materials, components and work in progress. It is important for a company to acquire
competitive advantages as the company struggles to deliver the right product at the right place
and time. A flow whose velocity allows the execution of manufacturing process will have
expected satisfaction level.
5
Forklifts, when executing the last activity while transporting goods in the pavilion, the forklifts
always travel on uneven roads causing great bouncing, burdening maintenance costs for
equipment wear or premature breakage
The study has it that although there will be enough forklifts to meet the demand from the
manufacturing sector, many times it will not be possible to meet immediately the manufacturing
needs due to reasons like long distances to travel and frequent maintenance due to excessive use
of equipments.
Forklifts-Equipments used to carry goods or cargo and moving them to the truck or vehicle to
dispense them to their various destinations

2.3 INDICATORS ON TRANSPORT AND LOGISTICS
These indicators in transport and logistics in a bid to get more businesses to use, the SGR and
railway lines , PARASTATAL SAIDD FEB (2014), Cargo owners transporting 12-16 ft.
containers from Nairobi to Mombasa via SGR will pay a drop of amount when using them.
The one on one logistics company has engage the business community and other stakeholders on
fright rates in the lead up to the review of charges for containerized cargo to and from the
transporting company .
Business bottom-line will be impacted easily by poor material handling equipment and poor
logistics management. The manager will be procuring the right number of resources at the right
time and initiate curtail kelps.
Delivery time: this logistic metric is a measure of process efficiency within the logistics group. It
is the duration between the moments of shipment from the warehouse to the moment of receipt
by customer.
Lead time: this measures the amount of time in between order placement by the customer and
receipt of order.
Inventory velocity: reveals the percentage of inventory that is estimated to finish during a given
period.
Inventory turnover: reveals insights and helps in optimizing inventory levels in order to meet
customer demands and reduce risks of outdated inventory.
Number of shipment: this metric monitors number of orders that are shipped out of the
warehouse.
8
number of studies have shown that logistics performance is statistically important and related to
bilateral trade volumes (Hausman, 2013).
The issue of equipment and devices must be examined since they will be classified into
categories depending on the type of material to be handled.
A number of research articles consider the size of the company as a factor to be considered since
it affects the performance of transport and logistics in logistics companies. Since the beginning
of 2020, maritime digitalization trends have accelerated and their hats been increase in the
unexpected fluctuation of cargo flows.
9
2.5 CARGO FLOW OPTIMIZATION.
Cargo flow optimization is exceptional transparency of ongoing cargo operations and data flow
visibility to ensure the most effective use of resources and generate actionable insights for
planned events according to the soviet ENCYCLOPEDIA (2013). The size of freight flow is
measured by the density of freight traffic. It depends on the production volume, the freight
turnover associated with the volume and the extent of the network.
Full cargo floe optimization is critical for companies and terminals to achieve efficiency but
achieving this demands collaboration across all stakeholders. The average freight density on the
rail roads of the USSR is 18.5 million ton-kilometers. A collaborative and holistic approach
is imperative to attain inteli8gent cargo flow optimization.

CHAPTER THREE
3.0 METHODOLOGY
3.1 INTRODUCTION.
In this chapter, there are assumed research methodologies. This chapter presents the entailed
sampling and sampling size, target population, research design, data collection and instruments
and data analysis.
The research design study mainly uses qualitative and quantitative quantifiable and methods
based on the study objectives and strengthen the research findings leading to a collective diverse
data. Research was done through direct interviews, sampling and use of questionnaires. The use
of questionnaires posted some difficulties at the beginning since some clients gave wrong
information and also because the targeted population could not be reached out due to the
working hours. This led to the use of descriptive survey which proved to be the most effective
and convenient way in the Trans [ort and Logistics Company.
The descriptive survey set questions which were directly asked to individuals. It also sought to
explain perceptions and behavior on the basis of data gathered at a particular time. One had to be
truthful while giving out the findings and answers to the questio9ns so as to get accurate
information for analyzation.
11
WORKERS TARGET POPULATION TARGET POPULATION %
FORKLIFT USERS 40 40%
TRUCK OPERATORS 30 30%
STORE KEEPERS 30 30%
TOTAL 100 100%
The researcher used both the open and closed ended questionnaires to prevent and avoid limited
ranges of resources, responses and to increase the level of interaction in order to acquire resolute
and tactful information while also encouraging freedom of expression.
In order to ascertain that the information presented was true, an interviewer in the name of a
researcher was sent to carry out interviews to different workers. This was found to be more
12
reliable since the researcher could tell when the interviewee was being deceitful and giving out
wrong information. Creating a good rapport between the researcher and the respondent was
meaningful as it led to good cooperation between the two leading to comprehensive findings.
These questionnaires will be administered only to the targeted audience to help the researcher
address the objectives of the study. The following instruments were used:
3.6.1 RECORDING
This type of data collection will also be used since some of the information given may be too
confidential or too bombastic to recall. Therefore the necessary equipment needed for recording
such as cameras will be installed.
3.6.2 PILOTING
The researcher will personally administer questionnaires to the sampled respondents. The first
group will be given to the manager in order to get the benefits or problems encountered in the
management of material handling equipment while the second group will be given to the
supervisor in order to get information on rate of return on the amount invested in the material
handling equipment and effectiveness in operation.
Piloting is actually the preliminary research prior the main study since its significance is to check
out research procedures so that adjustments can be made before the actual data is collected.
3.7 VALIDITY.
Validity is the degree to which the result from analysis of data actually represents the phenomena
under the study according to Mugenda was Mugenda.
The validity of the instrument addressed by randomization in which the researcher asked random
questions from the questionnaires, use his observation skills to see if the results conformed.
13
3.8 RELIABILITY.
Is the degree to which an assessment tool produce stable and consistent results? The researcher
will administer the same questionnaire twice over a period of time in the same group of
individuals and if the results from the first response will conform to that of the second one, then
the results will be deduced to be collateral and evaluation of the data will commence.
14
CHAPTER FOUR.
4.0 RESULTS AND DISCUSSION
This chapter gives the information on the reports and findings of data collected from one on One
Global Logistics Company Nairobi, Kenya. It entails the presentations of findings and analysis
of data collected. From the report given, the sample was attained by the use of questionnaires to
different groups of people to assess the effects of improved technology on material handling
equipment on performance of transport and maintenance in One on One Global Logistics
Company.
15
This was represented as shown below.
16
Most of the respondents were actually in the age bracket of 3-4 years and were able to give the
strategies on how to improve the material handling equipment. This was eminent since it makes
the shipment easier and effective.
10(20%) of the respondents agreed that there is positive impact, 20(40%) strongly agreed,
5(10%) disagreed, 5(10%) strongly disagreed while 10(20%) gave neutral response as shown
below.
17
From the findings, the productivity level, material handling operations and maintenance has
greatly improved since majority of the respondents strongly agreed with the impacts brought
about by the equipments.
18
The findings were then recorded as follows:
19
From the findings, it was deduced that most of the respondents strongly agreed that there was
positive correlation between the improved material handling equipment and maintenance in one
on one global logistics. This data was analyzed and represented as follows:
It was deduced from the findings that material handling equipment is a key factor needed when
handling materials and when used with the intended purpose, the productivity and performance
of the operations in sure companies are sure to be greatly increased.
The relationship between material handling equipment and maintenance in One on One Global
Logistics Company showed a positive correlation.
20
As reported from the respondents findings who strongly agreed that material handling concept
should highly be incorporated into the company, the material handling equipment was given
priority as it pertains the operational work to be carried out in the whole company.
By using the correct equipment for the correct cargo, there is sure to be storage space since the
company also enhanced unitization and containerization of materials. Improving the efficiency of
the handling systems can be made easier by use of the intended equipment for the intended
purpose.
It can be observed from the tables above and data displayed that the material handling equipment
positively impacted the performance of transport and material movement in One On One Global
Logistics Company.
Some of the metrics used such as lead time, inventory turnover and inventory velocity also affect
the performance and such parameters should be replenished once exhausted.
The type of material handling equipment to be used depended on the type of cargo, nature of
cargo, weight of freight, condition of the consignment to be moved and the capacity of shipment
optimization to be transported to and from the warehouse or store, to the trucks and then to the
intended customers.
The data brought from the field by the researcher was analyzed and deduced that the respondents
responses were true and
One on one global logistics has improved in productivity and the existence of equipment such as
the conveyor belts have reduced bottlenecks during operations.
4.9 CONCLUSION
In conclusion, the findings realized that the correlation between material handling equipment and
performance of transport was a positive one therefore the study proved to be effect
