During the teenage years, many young people can at times be difficult to talk to. They often seem to dislike
being questioned. They may seem unwilling to talk about their work in school. This is a normal
development at this age, though it can be very hard for parents to understand. It is part of becoming
independent of teenagers trying to be adult while they are still growing up. Young people are usually more
willing to talk if they believe that questions are asked out of real interest and not because people are trying
to check up on them.
Parents should do their best to talk to their sons and daughters about school work and future plant but
should not push them to talk if they don’t want to. Parents should also watch for the danger signs: some
young people in trying to be adult may experiment with sex, drugs, alcohol, or smoking. Parents need to
watch for any signs of unusual behaviour which may be connected with these and get help if necessary.

ROOTED IN THE PAST
Good manners are a treasure to the people who possess them, as well as to the community they live in.
Manners are taught, learnt, and passed from generation to generation.
Even hundreds of years ago, children were taught to behave responsibly. They learnt to respect seniority.
When they passed an object to another person, they had to use both hands. When they entered a room, they
had to bow and greet the oldest person first. Boys learnt to work hard to support their families. Girls learnt
to do housework, and to take care of others. Loyalty and honesty were highly appreciated. When they
made a mistake, they would not let another person be punished for it. That would be cowardly and mean.
They were taught that families were strong, and everybody should stick together in adversity.
Fortunately, many of these values have been well preserved. They have contributed to making the unique
Vietnamese culture, and strengthening our society.

Dear Jenny,
It’s great to learn that you have been granted a scholarship to study at Queens’ College, a prestigious part
of Cambridge University, and that you will be able to pursue your dream of becoming a biologist.
Congrats!
I have been accepted to the maths class at Ha Noi High School - one of the best schools in Ha Noi. I love
math and I hope to become a mathematician one day. I know the route ahead is not smooth because I will
have to take courses in math, physics, and even in computing. My dad said I need not only a bachelor's
degree, but ideally a doctoral one if I want to get a good job. I would love to work at the Institute of
Mathematics like my dad because, due to his work at the institute, he has also been invited to teach in
several universities in France. Alternatively, I can choose applied mathematics and work in finance for an
international company. Moreover, my mother said I also need soft skills like teamwork skills,
interpersonal skills, and communication skills to do either of those jobs. Luckily, my new school provides
many extracurricular classes which I can take part in to relax and to pick up those skills.
Anyway, there is plenty of time for me to make detailed plans. I’ve decided to take a break for a while.
Wish you were here to go with me to Da Nang.

poisonous gases that it is damaging the statue even faster. Third, the statue is being destroyed by
extremes of temperature. The air is very cold at night, but during the day the stone of the statue
