SUMMARY

In the article "Housing key to Edmonton's long-term success; All governments, private sector
must work together," published in the Edmonton Journal on October 6, 2023, Annette Trimbee
wrote an article highlighting the importance of accessible and affordable housing to the success
of Edmonton, Alberta, and Canada. This is affecting citizens of all ages, origins, and backgrounds
as housing prices and inflation are on the rise and so is the decrease in housing supply. Most
concerns have been shared on the level of involvement in the city's housing market affairs by
international MacEwan students with many blaming on them disproportionately while
highlighting many concerns over policies that might limit their opportunities. Trimbee shows
that the housing problem needs cooperation of the governments, public and private
institutions. The MacEwan University is grappling with safe and affordable housing for its
escalating student population. Resolving this issue brings people together to foster both
economic and diversity growth with an excellent talent pipeline from the educational
institutions. This, therefore, calls for cooperation between the government, developers,
business entities, and the local community. MacEwan University supports working with these
stakeholders as they create housing that is accessible to all the individuals regardless of their
status as students. They support the direction that the City of Edmonton is engaging in
discussing and addressing the state of housing crisis, sustainability, inclusion, and enhanced
collaboration. Timbee insists on continued commitment and collaboration of all the
stakeholders in order to witness a long-term sustainable economic success and changes that
will see improved accessibility to housing. MacEwan University is passionate about substantive
contributions towards the same as a critical partner in ensuring the city grows and develops.

BUSINESS TOPIC ANALSYS
The article "Housing: A Key Factor in Edmonton's Long-Term Success" is directly related to the
main topic discussed in Chapter 1 of the business and economics book. The chapter entitled "
How do businesses and not-for-profit organizations help create our standard of living??" lists
the related ways businesses, government, and other non-profit organizations combine their
efforts to affect our standard of living. Specifically, the article aligned with the subtopic as it
comes under chapter's title of "Social Factors". The thrust of the article is on the safe and
affordable housing that is becoming or has become a pressing issue and how it affects the
choice and decisions of the students who want to pursue their higher studies. This embodies
the concept of social factors discussed in the chapter which call our attention on how these
factor such as attitude, value, and lifestyle may in some sway us in deciding one's provision in
education and dwelling. It outlines how important accessibility to housing is for students, as it
may affect the future pool of talented people and the economic progress of the city. The article
emphasizes the instrumental collaboration of governments, business communities, developers
and the community in general for addressing the housing issue giving echo on the concept
depicted in the chapter that partnerships are critical towards enhancing our quality of life. In
conclusion, the article confirms the message from the chapter that in order to promote
economic wellbeing and diversity fostering a quality life for all in the locality, there is need of
working collectively to address social factors like housing access.

BUSIESS TERMS

Economic Growth (Chapter 1, Page 29): The article shows how solving Edmonton’s housing
crisis is critical to the growth of the city and the growth of MacEwan University. The success of
both the university and the city depends on the availability of affordable student housing.
University expansion also boosts local economies and improves the quality of life for residents,
demonstrating the need for affordable housing solutions. (Wade 29)

PERSONAL IMPACT

I learned about the connection between local economic growth and affordable housing and
how various factors, including housing availability, play a role in economic progress. This made
me realize the complexity of economic systems and the importance of collaboration among
different stakeholders, such as governments, businesses, and schools. The research aspect was
eye-opening as I saw the application of economic concepts in the real world. The article caught
my attention as it addressed a current and relevant issue in both economics and my personal
understanding. It's a topic that impacts individuals, communities, and institutions, making it
crucial to study. This assignment showed me that economics is not just a theoretical subject,
but it has tangible effects on our lives and society. It's an exciting journey of learning, and I'm
eager to continue exploring similar topics in the future.
