Course Name: Introduction to Japanese Culture & Language - 1 - 2 - 2

Level : UG & PG

Course Objectives : To enable the students to learn the basic greetings, small simple sentences, self introduction in Japanese language to be used in daily life.
Emphasis will be given on the spoken skills. Japan’s cultural aspects are to be discussed in the class to develop interests in the students.
Note: Foundation Standard of Teaching Methodology will be adopted to teach in the classes. i.e. reading-listening-speaking.

Pre-requisites: NIL

Course Contents/Syllabus:

Module I: NIHONGO (JAPANESE) (Weightage: 20%)

Descriptors/Topics

1. General Features of Japan. Introduction of the language, Japanese Script (page 89 of Sakura)

2. Salutations and greetings.

3. Numerals.
4. Class room instructions, basic vocabulary related to class room, country etc.

5. Introduction of basic particles and small sentences (desu)

6. Socio-culture: How to address people.

Module II: CULTURE (Weightage: 20%)


Descriptors/Topics

1. Projects related to Cultural aspects of Japanese Society ie. Tea Ceremony, Ikebana, Origami, Furoshiki, Sumo
etc.
2. Culture related to home visit (ojamashimasu) ( Ume page: 25)

Module III: WATASHI (I) (Weightage: 20%)

6. Counter for age, people and different nationalities,

Module IV: DEMONSTRATIVE PRONOUNS/ADJECTIVES (Weightage: 10%)

1. Demonstrative pronouns. Kore , sore, are, dore
2. General vocabulary to make small sentences.
3. Demonstrative adjectives. Kono, sono, ano, dono.
4. Reference Words and Information: Family Names.

Module V: SYSTEM OF DEMONSTRATIVE WORDS (Weightage: 10%)

Module VI: JIKI TO HINICHI (TIME AND CALENDAR) (Weightage: 20%)

Students Learning Outcomes:
Students who complete this program will acquire basic knowledge of Japanese culture. They will be able to speak about oneself. Also, will be able to tell time,
day, date, month and year.

Pedagogy for Course Delivery: Classes are taken in interactive manner for better understanding of the subject matter. The motto of the
classes will be learning with fun, inclusive of class room activities.
