NATIONAL SECURITY IN THE
PHILIPPINES
The National Defense Act, commonly referred to as Commonwealth Act No. 1, served
as the Republic of the Philippines' initial legal framework for its national security
policy. The President is designated as the chief commander of the armed forces under
the 1987 Constitution, which calls for civilian leadership of the armed forces. The
National Security Council, which is responsible for developing national defense policy
and serving as an advisory body, is also under the direction of the President.

SUMMARY
National security in the Philippines is a state

security, and way of life are protected and
enhanced. The National Defense Act, also
known as Commonwealth Act No. 1, serves as
the initial legal framework for national
security policy. National security elements
include socio-political stability, territorial
integrity, economic sovereignty, ecological
equilibrium, cultural cohesiveness, moral-
spiritual consensus, and external peace.
Threats include internal issues like law and
order, illegal drugs, corruption, internal and
external conflicts, global uncertainties, and
the proliferation of weapons of mass
destruction.
