INTRODUCTION

On-the-job training is a crucial component that enables students to gain practical

experience and skills in various occupational fields. Unlike classroom learning, it is a

skill and responsibility that cannot be taught in a school environment. On-the-job

training allows interns to enhance their knowledge and abilities in real-world settings

through the guidance, observation, and instruction of a supervisor or mentor. This kind

of training equips students with the necessary skills to work on assigned projects

independently or with guidance, handle tasks effectively under time constraints, interact

better with people, and improve various other abilities.

Psychology students completing internships in clinical, industrial, and

educational settings is essential in gaining expertise in their field of study, such as

1
clinical psychology, human resources, or guidance counseling, which they may pursue

as a profession after graduation. However, the trainee only got 150 hours of practicum

experience in a clinical context because to the Covid-19 epidemic. The practicumer had

recently finished her studies at Cavite State University-Silang Campus at Biga 1 Silang

Cavite.

Objectives of the On-The-Job Training

The primary objective of on-the-job training is to equip students with the

necessary skills and experience to work in various real-world environments, such as

mental health clinics, university counseling centers, hospitals, and other institutions.

Depending on the circumstances, completing an internship can lead to a career after

graduation or help students gain valuable insights into their preferred field of practice.

Through practice, students can improve their clinical skills and become better clinicians.

Completing an internship in psychology can be a transformative experience that enables

students to develop new skills, values, and perspectives.

The primary objective of on-the-job training is to provide interns with optimal

opportunities to enhance their skills, knowledge, and abilities in a specific area of

psychology. The specific goals of the practicum were:

1. The objective is to facilitate the trainee in utilizing the theories that they have

acquired in their coursework in various practical situations, including

educational, industrial, and clinical settings. This implies that the trainee should

be able to put their theoretical knowledge into practical use in real-world

scenarios.

2
2. The aim is to assist the trainee in honing their abilities in various areas, such as
conducting psychological assessments, engaging and interviewing
clients/employees, understanding group dynamics, and writing psychological
reports. This implies that the trainee should be able to develop their proficiency
in these skills through practice, feedback, and guidance.

Significance of the On-The-Job Training

On-the-job training is a mandatory component of college education that aims to

educate and familiarize students with their chosen field and work. It is a comprehensive

internship program that enables college students to apply the knowledge they have

gained over four or more years in the classroom. On-the-job training is considered to be

one of the most effective teaching methods as it provides students with a practical

understanding of the industry and prepares them for their future careers.

Time and Place of the On-The-Job Training

The trainee completed 150 hours of service in a clinical context in MindSpeaks

Psychological Clinic Unit 3, 2nd floor, R&V Bldg. Buhay na Tubig, Imus City, Cavite.

MindSpeaks Vision

MindSpeaks vision is to be a premier mental health provider in the south which

caters to the diverse mental health needs of clients.

Goals and Objectives of the Establishment

The clinic will also support its mission, policies, and some of its advocacy by

assisting clients with their course-related research, providing psychological internships,

raising awareness about mental health issues, and offering mental health services through

counseling, therapy, mental status examinations, and consultancy.

Overall Organizational Structure and Functions of the Establishment

Dr. Myla Pilar S. Pamplona, a licensed professional teacher, registered

psychologist, guidance counselor, and psychometrician, is in charge of the MindSpeaks

Psychological Clinic. The clinic also employs three other registered psychologists,

6
including Ms. Marivic M. Awat, RPsy, RPm, LPT, Mr. Mike Jansen B. Pacifacio, MA,

RPsy, and Ms. Risa Bermido, MA, RPsy.

THE TRAINING AREA

Department Function

A clinic specializing in psychology deals with a range of mental and behavioral health

concerns affecting individuals of all ages, including emotional and psychological issues such as

severe mental illness and crisis intervention. The MindSpeaks Psychological Clinic provides

counseling, psychotherapy, psychological assessments/mental health examinations, consultation

services, as well as seminars and workshops to its clients. Moreover, the clinic strictly follows

ethical and procedural standards while delivering psychological therapy and provides high-

quality services to its clients at reasonable prices.

Facilities

The clinic consists of various facilities, including air-conditioned waiting areas,

counseling/therapy rooms, a psychological testing area, and an information desk. The

therapy room is designed to be peaceful, bright, and hygienic, and serves as a space

where a clinical psychologist can offer counseling and psychotherapy to clients,

addressing their specific needs and psychological issues. The clinic's services, as well as

referral and consultation services, are available on its information desk and Facebook

page.

Equipment

7
The clinic offers an array of psychological testing materials, including the Such

Sentence Completion Test, Draw A Person Test, House-Tree-Person Test, Oasis Test,

Bender Gestalt Visual Motor Test, DASS-21 Test, Baron EQ Inventory, and Neo Pi

Test, among others. Client information and documents are safely kept in filing cabinets,

and laptops are used for secure storage of client data and for online psychological testing

purposes.

Standard Operation Procedure

The clinic's operation hours are from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. every Tuesday to

Saturday, though there have been instances where services extended beyond 5:00 p.m.

based on the availability of the psychologist and clients. Clients can schedule their

appointments either online or face-to-face. They are given the option to choose between

online or face-to-face assessments. Before the session begins, the staff or interns sanitize

and clean the area, and clients are required to sanitize their hands before entering the

clinic. A signed informed consent form is also mandatory before the session begins.

8
THE TRAINING EXPERIENCE

Task Performed/Specific Task Assigned

The trainee provided assistance to clients with their psychological concerns, and

was responsible for conducting client interviews, writing psychological reports,

conducting research and writing a research paper, administering and interpreting

psychological tests, creating a case conceptualization, and producing an infographic

about mental health. This indicates that the trainee gained experience in a range of tasks

related to psychology and was able to apply their knowledge and skills to a variety of

practical scenarios.

Observed Strengths and Weaknesses of the Training Area

The clinic's strength lies in the amicable behavior and politeness of its personnel

and psychologists, who treat clients with respect and collaborate to address their

concerns. They also showed openness and cordiality to their interns. However, the

trainee noted that the clinic's main weakness is the absence of a full-time psychologist

and psychometrician, as most staff members work part-time and conduct sessions

online.

Insights
Clinical work is a challenging yet fulfilling profession that requires extensive

training, skills, knowledge, patience, and perseverance. During the trainee's month-long

experience in a clinical setting, they witnessed first-hand the difficulties that clinicians

face in helping their clients. Some clients may find certain tests boring or irritating,

requiring the clinician to exercise empathy and patience to ensure accurate test results.

9
Ultimately, the profession exists to assist clients and make their lives better, not

complicate them further.

SUMMARY

The purpose of the internship was to provide practical experience for the student

in dealing with various situations in a real-world environment, as well as to enhance their

skills and apply their classroom knowledge in a professional setting. The MindSpeaks

Psychological Clinic in Imus, Cavite was the location where the intern was assigned.

During the training, the intern was able to observe the clinic's operations and gain insight

into how psychological clinics operate. The clinic's staff and psychologist were

welcoming and helpful to the trainee, which allowed them to practice their skills as a

psychometrician in a real-world setting. The intern found the experience enjoyable and

informative, and believes that it will be beneficial in their future career.

EDUCATIONAL SETTING
(CAVITE STATE UNIVERSITY- SILANG CAMPUS)
DAILY JOURNAL

Day 1- Orientation Day & Start of the OJT – March 07, 2022, Monday

On this day, the trainee has an orientation with Mr. Joseph Callanta, the trainee's

supervisor, during which they review the intern's responsibilities and tasks throughout

her time with the company. The trainee starts her internship the same day after the

orientation.

Day 2- March 08, 2022, Tuesday

The trainee made a google form for students of the university. The content is all

about the Needs Assessment.

Day 3- March 09, 2022, Wednesday

On this day, the trainee has already handed in the form to the students. This is

the execution of the Needs Assessment Form.

Day 4- March 10, 2022, Thursday

The trainee woke up and went to school early. The trainee and all other trainees

form a meeting and different counseling scenarios are discussed.

Day 5- March 14, 2022, Monday

The supervisor had given them the duty of creating a career pathing dossier for

the guidance and counseling office on this specific day. The practicum students looked

for prospective job opportunities in each department, as well as salaries associated with

those positions and images of successful people working in those fields.

36
Day 6- March 15, 2022, Tuesday

While waiting for the entire student to answer the form, the trainee also helped

the supervisor on the other paper works.

Day 7- March 16, 2022, Wednesday

The trainee continues to assist the supervisor and other trainees in completing

their papers. The trainee also designed the needs assessment for the guided career

program's format and layout.

Day 8- March 17, 2022, Thursday

The responses to the Google form were well-organized. It was separated into

years and departments. They calculated the mean for each item, per portion, per year

level, and per department to determine which items in the form require more attention.

Day 9- March 21, 2022, Monday

For a little bit longer, trainees worked on the Guidance Career Pathing paper.

Although the file has been finalized and is ready to print, the results are insufficient. Due

to printer and ink problems, the photos contain lines. Due to a paucity of colored ink,

they are unable to deliver it to the supervisor.

Day 10- March 22, 2022, Tuesday

Trainees assisted with accreditation for the supervisor and other faculty. It's quite

difficult to accomplish since doing it correctly takes a lot of time, patience, and pressure.

It's particularly difficult because they've done it so many times. They began composing a

report on the requirements assessment's findings.

37
Day 11- March 23, 2022, Wednesday

The trainee continues to work on her Career Guidance Pathing assignment. All

of the necessary meanings, paths, photos, samples, and other information linked to the

pathis are recorded and stored in the portfolio.

Day 12- March 24, 2022, Thursday

The trainee continued to organize papers such as the results of the needs

assessment, career guidance pathing, and other papers. Because they involve so much

time and effort, all of these files are worthwhile. It's incredibly satisfying to see all of

these papers ready to print.

Day 13- April 4, 2022, Monday

Various counseling formats are organized by the trainee. She also built an intake

form to collect the student's/general counselee's information, which she then separated

for confidentiality..

Day 14- April 5, 2022, Tuesday

The trainee continues to organize and print various psychological tests, as well as

prepare forms for the counselees.

Day 15- April 11, 2022, Monday

The trainee put all the forms to the different portfolio. She also looked for the

interpretation and discussion to see the result of a certain counselee.

Day 16- April 12, 2022, Tuesday

On this day, the trainee sorted the portfolio and included the forms of the

38
counselees to make it look neat and tidy.

Day 17- April 13, 2022, Wednesday

The trainees are having a meeting about the entire week because it is half-day

today. The events of the entire week were discussed.

Day 18- April 18, 2022, Monday

The number of counselees continues to rise over time. It's encouraging to learn

that many students are willing to face their issues and desire to be assisted.

Day 19- April 19, 2022, Tuesday

These events taught the trainee a lot. On this particular day, the trainee assisted

in the administration of a test to a counselee. She also ran it to see what the results were

and what she should do, but the counselee was busy with her studies and didn't have

time for another counseling session, but the trainee was always waiting for her to return.
