ECOSYSTEMS- LIVING THINGS AND THE ENVIRONMENT

DEFINITIONS:

1. PRODUCERS IN ECOSYSTEM:
Producers are organisms that can make their food, such as trees, shrubs, grass, and some bacteria. All of
these are green in color because they contain chlorophyll that absorbs the energy from the sun and uses
it to produce its food.

2. CONSUMERS:
Living things that must hunt, gather, and eat their food are called consumers. Consumers must eat to
gain energy, or they will die There are four types of consumers: omnivores, carnivores, herbivores ad
decomposers.

3. ENERGY FLOW:
The energy flow takes place via the food chain and food web. During the process of energy flow in the
ecosystem, plants being the producers absorb sunlight with the help of the chloroplasts and a part of it is
transformed into chemical energy in the process of photosynthesis.

4. FOOD CHAIN:
A series of organisms each dependent on the next as a source of food.

5. FOOD WEB:
A food web consists of all the food chains in a single ecosystem. Each living thing in an ecosystem is
part of multiple food chains.
FOOD CHAIN:

FOOD WEB:
