Bien: HI, Today I will show how you can use science and engineering to construct a structure that

can
protect your egg from breaking when it falls.

Bien: Before we start, I want to introduce my self, I am Bien! Your Scientist for this episode of DeKids
Scientist!

Bien: The purpose if this experiment is to enhance your knowledge about science and improve your
engineering practice.

Bien: Before we begin, Lets us prepare our materials needed:

-18 pieces of straws ( Big straws are recommended like Milktea Straws)

-Duct tape

-3 sponges

-1 plastic bag *large size*

-Yarn * 64 inches long*

-1 Egg

-Scissors (for cutting)

-Marker (for tracing)

-Stick x1

Step 1 – combine 2 straws using a tape, repeat this 6x

Step 2 - join all joined straws using a tape, it will form a pyramind like shape structure

Step 3 – tape a sponge into the straw structure , it acts as a cushion to protect the egg from falling. *do
what is shown*

Step 4 – You may add support by taping other straws into the straw structure *do what is shown*

Step 5 – cut the plastic bag into half. *do what is shown*

Step 6 – poke a hole on all sides of the plastic bag using a stick. *do what is shown*

Step 7 – cut 4, 16 inches long yarns.

Step 8 - tie the yarns into each holes of the plastic bag.

Step 9 – tie the end of the yarn into both sides of the structure straw, you may add tape to make it
stronger. *do what is shown*

Step 10 – You now have an egg carrier for your egg drop project!

Now lets test our egg carrier by dropping it 36 ft from above, Orquillos you may now drop the egg
carrier.

Bien: Wow! It worked! *clapping*

You can try dropping it from a Higher to a lower place!

Bien: This is because the straw will absorb the force of the fall, keeping the egg safe. The bendiness of the plastic
straws can also act like a car's suspension and absorb some impact! Also, Once the parachute is opened, the
air resistance overwhelms the downward force of gravity. Preventing it to fall fast!

Thank you for listening kids! Remember that even though you fail at first try, you can always try again!
That is what experimenting and engineering all about! “
