OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH AND SAFETY ACT, (Act No 85 of 1993)

CONSTRUCTION REGULATION 19

REG. 19.(3) A contractor must cause every material hoist –

to be inspected on a daily basis by a competent person who has been appointed in writing and has the experience
(a)
pertaining to the erection and maintenance of material hoists or similar machinery;

inspection contemplated in paragraph (a), to include the determination of the serviceability of the entire material
(b)
hoist including guides, ropes and their connections, drums, sheaves or pulleys and all safety devices;

(c) inspection results to be entered and signed in a record book, which shall be kept on the premises for that purpose;

(d) to be kept properly maintained and that the maintenance records in this regard are kept on site.

1 Ensure the hoist is inspected in accordance with the legislation and according to the manufacturers requirements, and the
results tabled for record purposes. Inspect daily.
2 Deviations must be reported immediately and repaired prior to re-use of the equipment.
3 Only the trained appointed person to operate the material hoist.
4 Ensure that no person rides on a material hoist.
5 Ensure that the hoist is not overloaded according to the mass load.
