ROCK MASS CLASSIFICATION: RMR, GSI, Q-SYSTEM,
CONVERSIONS

15/08/2022
Department of Civil Engineering, Monash University
Assignment 2.1: rock mass classification
• Due in 21/08 next Sunday, 11:55 pm
• 3 rock masses: Granite, Sandstone, Mudstone
• For each rock mass: estimate RMR, Q System, GSI
• For each rock mass: estimate GSI using empirical conversion equations
• Provide comments and discussions for your calculations!

SOME HINTS
▪ UNCERTAINTY: which value do I pick? There is no one standard way to
do geotechnical engineering
Different methods/formulas/equations/descriptions Cross-verification of Different ratings
You need to provide justifications to why you choose this rating: not enough info?
▪ Read descriptions carefully:
“The rock mass at the outcrop surface is wet. Medium inflow is expected at the underground
excavation.”
▪ Assumptions?
▪ Conservative?
▪ Accept the uncertainty: give a range?
▪ Calculations is preferred: water pressure, insitu stress……
▪ Water pressure simple unit conversions: 10 m water head = 1 kg/cm2 = 1 bars = 0.1 MPa
▪ Insitu stress: what is the MAJOR stress?
▪ Keep you units consistent!
