ACTIVITY 11 (READING EXERCISE)

Instructions: Answer the following questions

1. Explain the process why wet cells are used in starting car engines?
Wet cells provide a large amount of power in a short time so when the car starts, the battery
can provide energy. car for a long time
.
2. Differentiate and explain spontaneous and non-spontaneous reactions. Give
examples.
Spontaneous reactions occur under the given conditions, while non-spontaneous reactions
require energy to proceed.
Example: coal combustion is an example spontaneous and for coal fires is uncontrolled
environments. Melting of ice is a non-spontaneous process because in ice the molecules are packed very
tightly. the reason for this is the presence of H-bonds - and therefore ice has low entropy.

3. How do batteries work?

The reaction at the anode produces electrons and the reaction at the cathode absorbs them.
Net result is electricity.

4. Why is electrolysis important in the industries?

The process of electrolysis is very important in industry because it gives us the means to reduce
the metals that we otherwise cannot produce. Also in the coming years, electrolysis will be used on a
very large scale. produce hydrogen and oxygen.

5. Compare wet and dry cells in terms of uses and importance.

Wet cells are long-lasting batteries with a high number of charge-discharge cycles. This is
possible used to start cars and engines, while dry cell batteries are reliable and inexpensive, they are
often used to power electron
