READING
Read the magazine article and choose the correct answer (A, B or C).
The different faces of Andy Serkis
Andy Serkis is from England. He has lots of work in America and countries like France, but his home
is in England.

He’s friendly and funny. He’s slim, and not very tall (1.73 m). His eyes are green and his hair is dark
brown and grey. Andy is an amazing actor and can change his appearance.

In the film Lord of the Rings, Andy is a small, unhappy creature called Gollum. His hair is long,
brown and dirty, and his eyes are very big and bright blue.

In Rise of the Planet of the Apes, he plays Caesar. He has white skin, not pink like Andy’s, dark
brown and grey hair (all over his body!) and grey eyes. He’s very strong and is not very friendly to
people.

In Einstein and Eddington, Andy is the German scientist Albert Einstein. His eyes, normally green,
are dark brown and his hair, usually short, is long and light brown.

So Andy has lots of experience of changing his appearance!

1 Andy Serkis is
A American.
B English.
C French.
2 Andy’s eyes are
A grey.

3 Gollum’s eyes are

4 Caesar is

Carlos, the Teenage Chef
What can you do with cheese?
There aren’t only one or two great recipes with cheese – there are hundreds! My favourite isn’t a
recipe with English cheese, it’s with brie, a kind of French cheese. The recipe isn’t very good for you
so don’t eat it every day!
The ingredients are 200g of brie, three slices of bread, an egg, some oil and some salt and pepper.
First, cut up the bread into very small pieces and bake them for five minutes. Beat the egg in a bowl
and add some salt and pepper. Then cut up the brie into long, thin slices and put them one by one into
the egg. Put the brie slices into the bread so there is bread all over the brie. Fry the brie, bread and
egg in some oil so they are brown on both sides and you can eat them with ketchup – delicious!

Read the article and decide if the sentences below are True or False. Put a cross (X) in the correct
place in the table.

A day in the life of a trainee astronaut

It can take up to two years to train to be an astronaut. After training, some astronauts wait for ten
years before they make their first trip into space. So what’s life like as a trainee astronaut? Well, we
asked one!
‘We all learn how to use and take care of the complex equipment we use, so we have many classes.
These happen in a classroom, in machines that are a bit like real space ships, and in the swimming
pool. The swimming pool is very similar to being in space because you weigh much less in water!
‘We also have to have language classes. My first language is Japanese, but I have to learn English
and Russian too, so I can talk to the ground crew. I have to be very fit so I exercise for about three
hours a day. Many of my colleagues go running together, but I prefer cycling on my own.
‘There are training centres in Germany, Russia, Japan and the USA and we spend time at all of them.
I hope one day I can make it into space.’

1 Astronauts have ten years of training before they go into space.
