PS4 vs PS5: Is it time to upgrade?

The PS5 has been out for over two years now, so we are well into the new
generation. But there are plenty of people still on the PS4, wondering
whether it’s the right time to finally upgrade.

We’ve decided to help you reach your final decision by breaking down the
main differences between the two Sony consoles. We’ll explain how useful
each key upgrade is, and whether we think the PS5 has enough new
features to make the costly investment worthwhile.

So without further ado, here are the key differences between the PS4 and
PS5 consoles.

Price
The PS4 is no longer being manufactured, so it is very difficult to find in
stock. It previously retailed for £249.99, although you may find it even
cheaper now, especially if you’re willing to buy it second-hand.

As for the PS5, it’s available for £479.99 / $499.99, while the digital-
only edition is priced at a far more affordable £389.99 / $399.99. The
PS5 was slightly cheaper when it first launched in the UK and Europe, but
ultimately saw a price hike due to high inflation rates.
1 ITF - English 1 - Academic year 2022-2023

Design
The PS5 and PS4 consoles look very different. The PS4 looks like a plastic
black box, with diagonal edges giving it a little bit of styling and the
PlayStation logo slapped on top.

The PS5 looks far more extravagant, with huge white faceplates on both
sides. This makes it harder for the PS5 to blend into your home
entertainment setup, sticking out like a sore thumb.

The PS5 is also noticeably larger than the PS4, making it more difficult to
slot in a cupboard underneath your TV. Sony has a good reason for this,
as it has expanded the cooling system to make the thermals more
efficient. As a result, the PS5 runs far more quietly than its predecessor.

The PS5 can also be customised with other face plates. So while it comes
in white at default, Sony also offers faceplates in blue, pink, purple, black
and more. The PS4 can’t be customised in the same way, although you
can sometimes purchase special editions that look more unique.

Both the PS4 and PS5 support horizontal and vertical placements,
although switching between the alignments is more of a hassle with the
PS5. Instead of just flipping it on its side, you need to make some
adjustments to the stand.

You’ll find similar ports on the two consoles, although the PS5 also has
USB-C, which enhances the charging time for peripherals and controllers,
and HDMI 2.1.

Just like the PS4, the PS5 has a disk drive. That said, you can purchase a
Digital Edition at a slightly cheaper price which forgoes the disk drive.

Specs and performance

We’ve compiled the technical specifications of both machines below so you
have a concrete idea of how they compare. Obviously, the PS5 is
significantly more powerful given it’s essentially the next evolution of
Sony’s console brand.

With such power, the PS5 is able to play modern games in 4K. Sometimes
you’re also able to play games at a high frame rate, with a maximum
output of 120fps. This makes fast motion appear smoother, which is
important for eSports games since it gives you a competitive edge.

The PS5 also supports ray tracing, which allows games to make use out of
more realistic lighting and shadow effects. However, it’s rare for a game
to be able to run in both 4K and ray tracing without seeing the frame rate
drop down to 30fps. The PS5 may be powerful, but it still has to make
several compromises when running modern games.
1 ITF - English 1 - Academic year 2022-2023

So if you’ve got a 4K TV or monitor, games should look substantially

better on the PS4. The added power also enables the newer console to up
the graphics settings for a high visual fidelity.

The most obvious performance upgrade can be seen through the SSD
upgrade though. By adopting an NVMe SSD, the PS5 is now able to load
games in a matter of seconds. Games such as Ratchet and Clank: Rift
Apart have taken advantage of this technology, allowing characters to
travel between game worlds in a blink of an eye. In comparison, PS4
users will usually have to wait a few minutes to load up a new game
world.

Games
The PS5 is backwards compatible, which means it can run virtually any
PS4 game, either via a disk or a digital download. However, this is not a
two-way relationship.

There are a number of PS5 games that are too demanding for the PS4
specs, and so are not able to run on the older console. These
include Reurnal, Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart and Demon’s Souls.

However, this list isn’t as long as we would expect from a console two
years into its lifecycle. Flagship PlayStation games of 2022 such as God of
War Ragnarok and Horizon Forbidden West are available on the PS4 as
well as the PS5. This is surprising, although we don’t expect this trend to
continue for much longer.
For example, the upcoming Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 will only available on
the PS5, and so will not be ported over to the PS4. Third-party games
such as Final Fantasy XVI will only be available on the PS5, too. So while
2022 has been a great year for PS4 owners, there’s no doubt that time is
running out for the platform in terms of new game launches.

Verdict
The PS5 has some clear upgrades over the PS4, including a more powerful
graphics performance, faster loading times and superior cooling. But it
also has a few drawbacks too, with the cumbersome design and increased
price likely putting many gamers off.
1 ITF - English 1 - Academic year 2022-2023

And if you only care about getting access to a better library of games,
there’s been little incentive to upgrade in 2022. Major games such as God
of War Ragnarok and Horizon Forbidden West were available on the PS4.
However, we expect this trend to come to an end in 2023, with most
upcoming PlayStation exclusives being developed solely for the PS5.

Following a recent price hike, we’re not expecting the PS5 to become
cheaper anytime soon. That said, we do expect to see it become available
with more game bundles in the future. We think the PS5 is worth the
upgrade, but it’s probably worth getting a 4K TV first or at least waiting
until a PS5 exclusives arrives that really gets your heart racing.

The 9 Best Programming Languages to

Learn in 2023
If you’re new to the field of software development, the toughest part of
learning programming is deciding where to begin. There are hundreds of
programming languages in widespread use, each with its own complexities
and idiosyncrasies.

The good news is that as you begin your journey as a software developer,
you’ll start to discover which programming language will be most suitable
for you, your interests, and your career goals.

In the list below, we go over the best and most in-demand programming
languages for many of the most common use cases including web
development, mobile development, game development and more.

1. JavaScript

With increasing demand for dynamic, single page web applications, it’s
nearly impossible to become a professional software developer without
learning JavaScript. According to Stack Overflow's 2022 Developer's
Survey, JavaScript is the most popular language among developers for the
tenth year in a row. Nearly 66% of survey respondents reported that they
had used JavaScript in the past year.

Along with HTML and CSS, JavaScript is essential to front-end web

development. A majority of the web’s most popular sites, from Facebook
and Twitter to Gmail and YouTube, rely on JavaScript to create interactive
web pages and dynamically display content to users.

Although JavaScript is primarily a front-end language run on the browser,

it can also be used on the server-side through Node.js to build scalable
1 ITF - English 1 - Academic year 2022-2023

network applications. Node.js is compatible with Linux, SunOS, Mac OS X,

and Windows.

Because JavaScript has a forgiving, flexible syntax and works across all
major browsers, it is also one of the friendliest programming languages
for beginners.

At Fullstack Academy, we chose to focus our curriculum on Javascript back

in 2013. Now on our 10th year as leaders in the tech education space,
Fullstack Academy continues to primarily teach full stack JavaScript across
all our coding bootcamps for 2023--including our beginner-friendly Web
Development Immersive and all-levels Grace Hopper Program for women
and nonbinary coders.

2. SQL

Along with Python, SQL programming is essential to the efficient use of

data in web applications. Unlike other coding languages on our list,
though, SQL specifically enables the storage, extraction, and manipulation
of data within an existing database.

As the primary database programming language, SQL has its own markup
that must be learned to effectively communicate with databases.
Programmers interested in working with apps that utilize intensive-use
databases like social media platforms, payment processors, and music
libraries should consider learning SQL. For prospective data professionals,
SQL familiarity is usually a must-have skill for roles like database
administrator, data analyst, and QA engineer.

3. Rust

Rust is a bit of an upstart among the other languages on this list, but that
doesn’t mean it’s not a valuable language to learn. Stack Overflow’s 2023
Developer's Survey found that Rust was the most loved programming
language among developers for the seventh year in a row, with 86.1
percent of Rust developers saying that they want to continue working with
it.

Developed by the Mozilla Corporation, Rust, like C and C++, is intended

primarily for low-level systems programming. What Rust adds to the mix,
however, is an emphasis on speed and security. Rust emphasizes writing
“safe code” by preventing programs from accessing parts of memory that
they shouldn’t, which can cause unexpected behavior and system crashes.

The advantages of Rust mean that other big tech companies, such as
Dropbox and Coursera, are using it internally for operational purposes.
1 ITF - English 1 - Academic year 2022-2023

While it may be a bit more difficult to master than other beginner

languages, Rust programming skills are likely to pay off handsomely, as
the language's popularity will only continue to rise in the near future.

4. Go

One of the core languages favored by Google, Go is the little language

that could. As a low-level language, Go is ideal for engineers who want to
enter the field of systems programming. It encompasses much of the
same functionality of C and C++ without the difficult syntax and steep
learning curve. It’s the perfect language for building web servers, data
pipelines, and even machine-learning packages.

As a compiled language, Go runs “close to the metal,” allowing for a

blazing-fast runtime. It’s an open-source language, and ambitious
developers can see their personal contributions adopted and enjoyed by
programmers worldwide.

5. Python

Python is perhaps the most user-friendly programming language of any on

this list. It’s often said that Python’s syntax is clear, intuitive, and almost
English-like, which, like Java, makes it a popular choice for beginners.

Also like Java, Python has a variety of applications that make it a

versatile, powerful option when choosing the best programming language
for your use case. If you’re interested in back-end web development, for
example, then the open-source Django framework, written in Python, is
popular, easy to learn, and feature-rich. Django has been used in the
development of some popular sites like Mozilla, Instagram, and Spotify.

Python also has packages such as NumPy and SciPy that are commonly
used in the fields of scientific computing, mathematics, and engineering.
Other Python libraries such as TensorFlow, PyTorch, scikit-learn, and
OpenCV are used to build programs in data science, machine learning,
image processing, and computer vision. Python's science and data
applications make it a great choice for the academically inclined.

6. Swift

If you’re interested in Apple products and mobile app development, Swift

is a good place to start. First announced by Apple in 2014, Swift is a
relatively new programming language used to develop iOS and macOS
applications.

Swift has been optimized for performance and built from the ground up to
match the realities of modern iOS development. Not only does iOS run on
1 ITF - English 1 - Academic year 2022-2023

every iPhone and iPad, but it’s also the basis for other operating systems
such as watchOS (for Apple Watches) and tvOS (for Apple TVs). In
addition, Apple isn't going anywhere as a tech industry leader, and iOS
apps continue to be the most profitable in the mobile app marketplace.

7. Ruby

Ruby is another scripting language that’s commonly used for web

development. In particular, it’s used as the basis for the popular Ruby on
Rails web application framework.

Beginners often gravitate toward Ruby because it has a reputation for

having one of the friendliest and most helpful user communities. The Ruby
community even has an unofficial saying, “Mats is nice and so we are
nice,” encouraging members to model their kind and considerate behavior
on Ruby’s chief inventor Yukihiro Matsumoto.

In addition to the active community and its straightforward syntax, Ruby

is also a good language to pick up thanks to its association with great tech
businesses. Twitter, Airbnb, Bloomberg, Shopify, and countless other
startups have all built their websites using Ruby on Rails at some point.

8. C#

Like C++, C# (pronounced C Sharp) is a general-purpose, object-oriented

language built on the foundations of C. It was originally designed by
Microsoft as part of its .NET framework for building Windows applications.

C# uses a syntax that’s similar to other C-derived languages such as

C++, so it’s easy to pick up if you’re coming from another language in the
C family. C# is not only the go-to for Microsoft app development, but it’s
also the language mobile developers use to build cross-platform apps on
the Xamarin platform.

Additionally, anyone who is interested in VR development should consider

learning C#. C# is the recommended language for building 3D and 2D
video games using the popular Unity game engine, which produces one-
third of the top games on the market.

9. Scala

If you’re familiar with Java—a classic programming language in its own

right—it’s worth checking out its modern cousin, Scala. Scala combines
the best features of Java (such as its Object-Oriented Structure and its
lightning-fast JVM runtime environment) with a modern twist.
1 ITF - English 1 - Academic year 2022-2023

As a functional programming language, Scala allows engineers to elevate

the quality of their code to resemble pure math. Scala allows for
concurrent programming, allowing complex procedures to be executed in
parallel. Furthermore, it is a strongly typed language. Engineers can
create and customize their own data types, allowing them to have the
peace of mind knowing entire swaths of bugs are impossible at runtime.

It’s Code Time

When deciding which programming language to learn, it’s important not to

get caught up in flashy trends and popularity contests. The best
programming languages to learn in 2023 are likely the same ones that
were best to learn in 2017 and 2018, and that will continue to be true for
the next several years as well.

Although the field of computer programming changes rapidly, the

languages that we’ve discussed above have a great deal of staying power.
By learning one or more of these languages, you’ll be in an excellent
position not only for this year but in the years to come.

When beginning your journey into coding, only you can answer the
question of the best programming language to learn. Make your selection
based on your interests and the type of software development you want to
get into. Here is a quick summary of the different possibilities that we’ve
discussed:

Which Programming Language to Learn Based on Your Career Goals table

• Front-end web development: JavaScript

• Back-end web development: JavaScript, Java, Python, PHP, Ruby

• Mobile development: Swift, Java, C#

• Game development: C++, C#

• Desktop applications: Java, C++, Python

• Systems programming: C, Rust

speed-internet-connection/

10 ways to speed up your internet

1. Reposition your router and its antennas
You might prefer keeping your router hidden inside a cabinet or tucked
away in a bookshelf. But if your Wi-Fi signal is suffering, keeping your
router out of sight and out of mind could be the cause.

Here’s the ideal placement for your router:

• Located in the center of your home for the best coverage

• Surrounded by open air to remove interference and avoid
overheating
• Not located near electronic devices, appliances, or metal objects
• If possible, placed up high on a shelf or with a mount
• A central location for your router is critical if you want to boost your
Wi-Fi coverage even in the corners of your home.

This might be difficult if you’ve got only one outlet to plug your equipment
into. But it’s worth the small hassle of running cables along walls to be
able to stream Netflix in your bedroom or set up your home office in the
dining room.

Sometimes running cables just isn’t an option. If that’s the case in your
home, try to place your router as close to any areas where you usually
need an internet connection or as close to the devices you use the most.
1 ITF - English 1 - Academic year 2022-2023

Strategically aim your router's antennas

You might think that your router’s antennas should both stick straight up,
but you might improve your Wi-Fi signal and range by moving them
around.

Most modern routers have omnidirectional antennas, so they broadcast a

Wi-Fi signal in a direction that’s perpendicular to the antenna itself.

Here’s how to position external router antennas to power up your Wi-Fi

signal:

• If you live in a single-story home, point your antennas straight up.

• If you live in a multi-story home, point half of your antennas
straight up and the other half of your antennas at an angle or
parallel to your floor.

If your router came with internal antennas, all you need to do is make
sure you stand it up the way it’s meant to sit. So don’t flip your router on
its side if it’s meant to stand tall and proud.

2. Update your router's firmware

Keeping your equipment’s firmware up to date can improve your internet
speeds and also up your security. Most routers let you update your
firmware within the main administration panel, so it’s easy to download
the new file and install it.

If you’ve got a modem-router combo or router that your internet provider

gave you, you may not need to update your firmware. My Xfinity Gateway
doesn’t have a firmware update option because Xfinity keeps it
automatically updated.

3. Reset your router

Reset your router every month or so to give the device a break and
refresh your internet connection. If you experience serious upload and
download speed issues, you could even reset your router daily.
1 ITF - English 1 - Academic year 2022-2023

If you have a modem separate from your router, reset that too. Reset
everything! Resetting the modem stimulates your connection to your ISP,
and that’s what turning it on and off again is all about.

Don’t want to add another task to your to-do list? Easy, get an outlet
timer like Century's programmable timer. You can plug your modem and
router into a timer that will turn the system on and off for you. Set the
timer to restart the system every night while you’re in bed. That way, you
can wake up to that fresh internet feeling every morning.

Keep in mind resetting your router and modem won’t magically turn your
snail of a connection into a cheetah. But it will help and it’s a super easy
fix.

4. Use an ethernet cable

Cabled connections like ethernet, will always be faster and more reliable
than wireless ones. The cable gets the signal directly to your connected
device rather than relying on over-the-air transmissions.

If you can, connect your most important devices to the internet via an
ethernet cable. Personally, connecting my home PC via ethernet has been
the top 12 decisions I’ve ever made. I don’t mean to brag, but uh, take a
look at these download speeds:

You can connect these multiple devices to ethernet:

• TV
• PlayStation, Xbox, or other gaming console
• Laptop or desktop computer
• Especially if you tend to watch data-heavy media like videos on your
TV, cable connections are best.
Oh, and there’s a bonus: ethernet is automatically more secure than Wi-
Fi. If you want to keep your banking information absolutely private,
ethernet is a better way to go.

Nothing's worse than lagging out mid-boss fight. That's why we

recommend using an Ethernet cable if you game. And if you're shopping
for a new ISP to support your gaming habits, we think these 10 ISPs are
pog for gaming.
1 ITF - English 1 - Academic year 2022-2023

5. Block annoying ads

Almost every content provider displays advertisements. Everywhere you
go online there are endless ads, pictures, GIFs, and auto-played videos.

Even if you don’t mind watching/seeing advertisements, your internet

connection speed does. Ad media slows down your internet connection, so
sometimes it’s easiest to just block them. Install an ad-blocking plugin
that will shut down those data-heavy auto-play videos, and you’ll free up
some breathing room for your connection.

Our recommended ad-blocking plugin is Adblock Plus. It's free and works
on most web browsers. Some VPNs also offer ad blockers,
like NordVPN, Surfshark, and CyberGhost.

6. Change your Wi-Fi frequency and channel

Okay, things are about to get more technical here, but stay with us and
get and you might just improve your Wi-Fi speeds. After you update your
router’s firmware, take a peek at your Wi-Fi frequency and channel
settings. Both of these are also found on your router’s settings page, and
adjusting them could give your Wi-Fi a burst of speed.

Which is better, 2.4 Ghz or 5 GHz Wi-Fi frequency?

The difference between the two Wi-Fi frequencies boils down to this:

• 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi travels farther, but at lower speeds

• 5 GHz Wi-Fi offers faster speeds, but at a shorter range
If most of your devices are within 10 feet of the router, go ahead and get
those fast speeds with a 5 GHz frequency. But if you’ve got a larger home
with lots of rooms, you’ll get more efficient data speeds with a 2.4 GHz
frequency.

You should be able to easily change your Wi-Fi frequency from your router
settings.

7. Give Wi-Fi leeches the boot

If your Wi-Fi network is public or you use an easy-to-guess password,
chances are someone, not something, is causing your Wi-Fi traffic jam.
1 ITF - English 1 - Academic year 2022-2023

You can easily give any unwanted devices or users the boot by changing
your Wi-Fi password. That way you’ll need to enter your new password on
any device you want connected to Wi-Fi—and unwanted devices and users
will be left high and dry.

If you’d rather double-check that uninvited guests are using your Wi-Fi
before you change your password, you can use apps or your router’s
settings interface to see who’s on your Wi-Fi network. The free app we like
most is Fing, which works with both Android and iPhone devices.

If you don’t recognize a device right away, try walking around your house
to see if any connected devices might fit the name or ask others in your
home what it might be. I wasn’t sure what the device “ut.comcast.net”
was in the screenshot above until I asked my partner.

Some routers and internet providers also have device management

settings that can identify the devices on your network. Here are some ISP
apps and router device management guides we’ve run across:

• AT&T Smart Home Manager

• Google Home and Google Wifi apps
• Linksys routers
• Xfinity xFi app
• My Spectrum App

8. Upgrade your router

An old router might be the blockage in your Wi-Fi network. If yours is
more than a few years old, it might be time to upgrade. Especially since
newer routers feature modern Wi-Fi protocols with faster max speeds.

A newer router might also come with extras like beamforming and
Multiple-User, Multiple-Input, Multiple-Output (MU-MIMO), which improve
signal strength and allow more devices to use your Wi-Fi at the same time
without diminishing signal quality.

We talk more about how beamforming and MU-MIMO can up your Wi-Fi
game in our guide to choosing a router. And you can check out our
favorite Spectrum and Xfinity Wi-Fi routers, including the TP-Link Archer
A20 that comes packed with Wi-Fi enhancing features.

9. Use a Wi-Fi extender or mesh Wi-Fi

system
Sometimes you need an extra piece of equipment to pull that Wi-Fi signal
to the farthest corners of your house.

When I visited my parents, I was so frustrated by the weak Wi-Fi signal in

the guest bedroom that I bought them a TP-Link N300 Wi-Fi extender.
Like magic, I could finally stream Netflix without the buffering icon
crashing the party.

Similarly, a friend bought a NETGEAR Orbi mesh Wi-Fi system to make

sure the Wi-Fi signal was strong throughout his two-story house.

Both Wi-Fi extenders and mesh Wi-Fi systems are an excellent way to
extend the reach of your Wi-Fi. But depending on your situation, one
might be a better option than the other. Here’s how they generally
compare:

Wi-Fi extenders

• Cheaper option
• Repeats your router’s Wi-Fi signal in order to extend the range
• Inefficiencies could slow down your Wi-Fi speeds
• Requires you to manually select the extender’s Wi-Fi network if you
move around the house

Mesh Wi-Fi networks

• More expensive
• Can replace your old router to create a Wi-Fi network
• More efficient than extenders
• Automatically select the strongest Wi-Fi signal as you move around
the house

10. Get a different internet provider

Sometimes your internet provider is the biggest problem. We admit this
tip isn’t necessarily easy or simple, but it is practical and might even be
cheaper for you in the long run. If your internet provider is going to give
you a slow internet connection no matter how many other tips you try,
consider a swap.

Most areas have only a couple Internet Service Providers (ISPs) available,
so it should be a pretty quick check to see if the other provider that serves
your area has better prices for faster internet speeds. You can skim this
roundup of best ISPs and check this month's internet deals to figure out if
an alternative provider might give you a better price.

Switching providers should be a last resort, but if you try the other tips on
our list and your speed is still sluggish, it might be time to make a
change. Especially if you’re using satellite internet and find out you can
switch to cable or DSL. (DSL or cable will most likely get you faster speeds
and more data than satellite internet.)

Keep your speed up and keep surfing

We know slow internet speeds can feel physically painful, especially if you
deal with a slow connection and high priorities every day. Use these ten
tips to up your internet speed a bit without wading through overly
technical server details, and don’t worry you should be back to
uninterrupted binging in no time.
