QUESTION 1
Classify each of the structures as shown in Figure Q1 as statically determinate,
statically indeterminate or unstable. If indeterminate, interpret the degree of
indeterminacy. The supports or connections are to be assumed as stated. (CO1-

QUESTION 2
Figure Q2 below shows an unsymmetrical cable with uniformly distributed load (UDL)
and point load (PL). Support B is located 3m below the support A. The UDL is 10kN/m
and the point load is 10 kN respectively. This UDL is spanning of 24m of this cable
and the point load is located 12 m from A. Determine the reactions at all supports and
Tmax. (CO1-PO1) (C3)

QUESTION 3
A 3-hinged circular arch of span 30 m has a rise 6m as shown in Figure Q3. The arch
is loaded with uniformly distributed load of w kN/m between point A to C and an
inclined concentrated load of 40 kN with 45o angle skew to the right at point E.

a) Determine the uniformly distributed load (w kN/m) if the horizontal reaction at point
B is 8.67 kN acting to the left and vertical reaction at point B is 19.50 kN acting
upward. (CO1-PO1) (C4)

QUESTION 5
The truss system shown in Figure Q5 is subjected to a vertical uniformly distributed
load of 20kN/m from E to F, vertical point loads 100 kN at B and 50 kN at C, and a
horizontal point load, P kN at E. The truss is pinned supported at A and roller supported
at D.

a) Compute the force in each member of the truss by using Method of Joints.(CO1-
PO1)(C3)
(10 marks)

b) Determine the vertical displacement at joint B using unit load method. The cross
sectional area of each member is A=400mm 2 and E=2 x 105 N/mm2.(CO1-PO1)

Note: Take the P value according to the following condition:

i. P = 20 kN for students with matrix number ends with 0-3
ii. P = 25 kN for students with matrix number ends with 4-6
