Define limit state and explain the two principles of limit state in design. (CO1-PO2)(C2) (5 marks) b) A beam can be in the form of a single span or multiple spans. Illustrate and differentiate bending behavior and design moment calculation for a simply supported single span beam and three span continuous beam. (CO1-PO2)(C4) (6 marks) QUESTION 2 Figure Q2 shows the first floor key plan layout of a building. Reinforced concrete beam and slab for the building is cast integrally to speed up the construction process. The following design data are given as follows. (Assume bar and link diameter) Exposure class = XC3 Characteristics strength of conerete, fox = 30 Nimm? Characteristics strength of steel, fx = 500 Nimm? Nominal cover, Crom 35mm All beam size (b x h) = 250 mm x 550 mm Slab thickness = 155mm Steel stress, fs = 280 Nimm? i) Propose number of tension reinforcements required at interior span of beam 3/A-D if the beam has to restrain an ultimate moment of 255 kNm. (CO2-PO3)(C5) (17 marks) li) Verify the adequacy of the beam 3/A-D against serviceability limit state (SLS) requirements of Eurocode 2 to satisfy the comfort of occupancy. The beams transfer total ultimate axial action of 1200 KN to the column. The column is designed to resist an ultimate bending moment of 70 kNm (excluding moment due to imperfection) that bends about major axis. The design data are given as follows: = 30 Nimm? 500 Nimm? 35mm 20mm Characteristic strength of concrete, fax Characteristic strength of steel, fyx Nominal cover, Cnom Assume bar diameter ‘Assume link diameter 8mm Clear height in major axis,L. 2750 mm Stiffness, (W/L) of each beam = 430650 mm? i) Classify the column whether it is short or slender if the limiting slenderness ratio in major axis (Aimz) is given as 20. (CO1-PO2)(C3) (6 marks) ii) Design the longitudinal and transverse reinforcements of the column by considering moment due to imperfection. (CO2-PO3)(C5) (10 marks) iil) Sketch the arrangement of GH20 longitudinal reinforcement for a 200 mm x 400 mm reinforced concrete column if the column is subjected to moment in major axis only and moment in minor axis only. Explain briefly elastic design theory and plastic design theory in relation to design failures. (CO1-PO2)(C2) (5 marks) b) A cantilever steel beam 406 x 178 x 60 UKB grade S275 is used to support a uniform distributed action as indicated in Figure Q4. Determine the maximum shear force and bending moment of the beam. Assume the beam is fully laterally restrained at each end and sits on 100 mm bearing at support. Ignore the self-weight of beam. (CO1-PO2)(C4) (4 marks) ©) Identify the section classification of the beam section in Question 4(b), and then check whether the beam section is able to resist the maximum moment and maximum shear force subjected to the beam. Illustrate buckled shape of a non-sway steel column with different types of end restraints. (CO1-PO2)(C3) (4 marks) b) Figure Q5(b) shows a 9 m height steel column of 254 x 254 x 73 UKC $275. The column has a fixed-pinned end conditions. The column is subjected to unfactored permanent action of S00KN and variable action of 250kN. Ignore self-weight of the column and assume the column section is Class 1. (CO2-PO3)(C4) i) Analyze the buckling resistance of the column to sustain the design action about the minor 2-2 axis. (8 marks) ii) A tie-beam is introduced at 4000 mm from top support, so that in-plane buckling about the z-z axis is prevented. Recalculate the capacity of the column against buckling.
