Interpreting – Community scenario #1 Professional / Patient

 A GP, Dr Jones, has requested the presence of an interpreter for a new

patient – Ndeke Ousmane – at his/her clinic in Armley…

Dr. Jones: Good morning. Come and sit down. What can I do for you?

Mr/Mrs Ndeke: Good morning. I don’t feel so well. I would like something to make me
better.

Dr. Jones: How do you feel?

Mr/Mrs Ndeke: I feel hot and tired. I don’t sleep well at night. My head aches.

Dr. Jones: When did all this start?

Mr/Mrs Ndeke: Three days ago. I thought I had a cold but it has got worse.

Dr. Jones: Do you have backache?

Mr/Mrs Ndeke: No. But my eyes are sore.

Dr. Jones: Are your eyes itchy?

Mr/Mrs Ndeke: Yes, they itch a lot. I also have a runny nose and a cough.

Dr. Jones: Oh, dear, it sounds like the flu.

Mr/Mrs Ndeke: Is there anything you can give me?

Dr. Jones: No, I’m afraid not. Just drink plenty of fluids. Take aspirin when
needed but no more than 8 in a day. Rest as much as you can.

Mr/Mrs Ndeke: I’ll do that. What can I do to sleep at night?

Dr. Jones: Take aspirin, your fever is high, so cool yourself with a lukewarm bath.
If it doesn’t get any better, come back.

Mr/Mrs Ndeke: Thank you, doctor.

 You are an African national in the UK. You’re not feeling too well and have
been advised to consult a GP clinic in Armley… An interpreter has been
asked to attend, as you speak very little English.

[Whilst the text, below, is in English, as part of the role-play, (sight-)translate it

into idiomatic French. Ham up the role of the patient as much as you like!]
