E - Decode two-syllable words following basic patterns by breaking the words into syllables. Learning Target: Students will be able to correctly identify how many syllables a word has and be able to decode words into their appropriate number of syllables. Anticipatory Set: The teacher explains that the students will be learning about syllables and asks the whole class if any of them know what a syllable is and how to figure out how many a word has. Model: Flipped Lesson Guided Practice: The teacher would show the video linked above and then explain to the students how they will complete their activity afterward. They will do several example words as a whole group before moving on to their activity. Independent Practice: After guided practice, students will then complete their follow- up activity independently. This activity consists of cutting out a word list, breaking each word into their separate parts, and pasting them in the cup that corresponds with the amount of syllables in the word. Check for Understanding: As the students complete their activity, the teacher will walk around and ensure that the children understand how to find the appropriate number of syllables. Closure: After all students have completed their activity, the teacher will ask the students again what a syllable is and how to find out how many a word has followed by a short discussion. Differentiation: High: Have gifted students complete longer words with more syllables or work with lower-level students. Low: Have them work with higher-level students or work on shorter words that only contain 1 or 2 syllables. SPED: (Hearing impairment) Give a transcript for the video with written notes on how to complete the activity. Offer deeper instruction on how to find the syllables based on the vowels.
