The reading of Rizal and his Times (19th Century) Introduction pp 1-9 gave me a great insight into the

life of the renowned Filipino hero, Jose Rizal. In the reading, I was able to learn about the various
aspects of Rizal’s life and the conditions of the Philippines during his time. Here are three important
things I realized from the reading:

1. The Philippines was under Spanish colonial rule during Rizal’s lifetime. The Spanish colonial rule was
oppressive and limited the rights of the Filipino people. Through the reading, I learned that Rizal was an
advocate for Filipino nationalism and independence. He wrote several books and articles that
highlighted the plight of the Filipino people and called for reform.

2. Rizal was a polymath. He was a physician, poet, novelist, linguist, and artist. He was also a skilled
ophthalmologist and was able to cure his mother’s eye problems. He was an advocate for education and
believed that it was the key to progress. He wrote several books to educate the Filipino people about
their rights and to promote the idea of Filipino nationalism.

3. Rizal was a martyr for the Filipino people. He was arrested and executed by the Spanish authorities for
his advocacy of Filipino independence. His death inspired the Filipino people to fight for their freedom
and eventually led to the Philippine Revolution. His death also served as a reminder of the importance of
fighting for justice and freedom.

Overall, reading about Rizal and his Times (19th Century) Introduction pp 1-9 gave me a greater
appreciation for the courage and determination of Rizal and the Filipino people. It also gave me a better
understanding of the conditions of the Philippines during his time and the importance of fighting for
freedom and justice.
