MAJOR No. 2

Title: “Cancer Institute”

Submission: December 14,2023. 9:00 am
* Late submission will have deduction based on how late the esquisse is
submitted.

Rationale:
Cancer Institutes are specialized healthcare facilities
or organizations that focus on the research, prevention,
diagnosis, treatment, and management of cancer. These
institutes typically bring together a multidisciplinary team
of healthcare professionals, including oncologist, surgeons,
radiologists, pathologists, and researchers, to provide
comprehensive cancer care and conduct cutting-edge research.
By establishing cancer institute, healthcare
organizations can consolidate resources, expertise, and
research efforts to provide comprehensive cancer care, drive
advancements in the field, and improve patient outcomes.
These institutes serve as centers of excellence, fostering
collaboration, research, and education to combat the
challenges posed by cancer.

Design Criteria:

Architectural design planning for a cancer institute

involves creating a functional and supportive environment for
cancer patients, healthcare professionals, and researchers.
The design should prioritize the specific needs of cancer
care, including patient comfort, efficient workflows,
infection control, and integration of advanced medical
technologies.

Research. Cancer institutes have dedicated research

departments that focus on advancing our understanding of
cancer, developing new treatment options, and discovering
breakthroughs in cancer prevention and early detection.

Patient Care. Provide comprehensive care to cancer patients,
including diagnostic services, treatment planning, surgeries,
radiation therapy, chemotherapy, immunotherapy, and
supportive care services such as pain management, counseling
and rehabilitation.

Education and Training. Play a Crucial role in educating

healthcare professionals, including physicians, nurses, and
researchers, through training programs, workshops,
conferences, and continuing education initiatives. They also
provide patient education and support programs to raise
awareness about cancer prevention, screening, and treatment.

Collaboration and Networking. Cancer Institute often

collaborate with other medical institutions, research
centers, and pharmaceutical companies to foster innovation
and drive progress in cancer research and treatment. They may
participate in clinical trials, share resources and
expertise, and collaborate on large-scale projects.

Support Services. Allocate space for support services, such

as counseling rooms, support group areas, rehabilitation
facilities, and wellness centers. These spaces provide a
holistic approach to patientcare and contribute to the
overall well-being of cancer patients.

Flexibility and Future Expansion. Plan for future growth and

expansion of the cancer institute. Consider modularity and
flexibility in space planning that can be easily adapted or
expanded as needed. Anticipate future advancements in cancer
care and research, ensuring the facility can accommodate
emerging technologies and evolving treatment approaches.

Principle of Design:

When developing architectural design for a cancer

institute, it is important to consider the specific need and
objectives of the institution. The following principles
should be applied to the building:

I. Efficient Workflows
II. Patient Focused Design
III. Safety and Infection Control
IV. Healing Environment
V. Specialized Expertise
VI. Integration of Advanced Medical Technologies
VII. Technology Infrastructure
VIII. Sustainable Design
